Starboard side runs warmer is the consensus but how much warmer? After runnung (3000 rpm) both sides are warm but when idleing the port side cools down and is almost cool to the touch. The starboad side seems to stay warm. How much difference should their be?

I don't think they should ever be too warm to put your hand on them for a few seconds.

What motor are you running? My 496 is the opposite, the port side runs about 10-15* warmer. My diagnostic software shows this pretty consistantly.

Yes starboard side, and I can put my hand on it and keep it on. But it is much warmer than port. Motor is a 2000 502 MPI. As I was feelin around the port side you could feel it getting cooler after a run but not on the starboard. I will poke around a little with hoses near thermostat. Does this engine have the "spring ball" thing to proportion water to each side?

I had the same problem, I noticed the raw water enters one side of the T stat housing and probably bounced off the oposite side and forces its way to the other, I made with some pvc and a few lengths of marine hose and clamps a equalizer, now they both are the same temperature.

I never checked if one sid was warmer or not. But i can say this . I can run my boat hard or normal and open the hatch and put my hand on the exhuast it is warm but i can hold my hand on it.
