I found out from a friend of mine on saturday night that he;s putting 1671 blowers on his engines.

they were making about 1,200 hp with 1271's.

he's owned two boats for the last two years - a 36 Nortech Cat and a 39' Nortech V.

traded both of them in on a new 44 MTI cat, pulled the engines out of his Nortech Cat and is having Joey Griffin pump up the volume -

1671's - I didn't even know there was such a thing.

:)

You laugh, but there is bigger yet. Have you seen the, I think they are called, PSI blowers that where outlawed in Top Fuel but have been used in many other applications...even in performance offshore boats.

They are screw type. Big momma' screws. :laugher:

I know Racecrafters' Sorcerer had some that where variants of these:

Which 44 MTI did he buy? I talked with him about the Orange one with 1075's in Key West. Is that the same one?

no frank went to the factory and picked out a new hull being finished in michigan or minnesota where they build the hulls, then they rig them in arkansas or something.

I have never seen so much attention to detail as I have seen on these boats. they are perfection on water.

With all due respect Jeff, you aren't trying to push over 1200 hp.

I don't mean to be sinical here, just my thoughts. You can't hold a high hp engine WOT for very long, and expect reliability. At least not like a Turbine.

yes - I do agree and N/A engines are not like turbunes, but you know - not everyone wants turbines because they present their own unique set of problems as evidenced by the fact that everyone that runs them seems to have a full time crank monkey wherever they go.

That wasn't the case with the last MY Way. it ran as it should, didn't need a monkey to follow it around. Only thing I remember happening was two drive failures due to a faulty rebuild.

Not to turn this into a piston vs turbine thread, but turbines are also alot easier on drives. Very smooth power, Very little vibration, rpms don't vary as much when the boat goes in and out of water.

Good luck to your buddy, hope it turns out great.

It's not the monkey that you need but the fuel tanker that needs to follow you. If they are so great tell everyone how to get insurance on turbines
I only saw Myway twice and each time I saw the boat there was a mechanic in the engine compartment monkeying around with stuff. I guess I got the wrong impression from that.

I guess I just like the roar of a V8 in a boat and sound of a turbine in a jet fighter.

however - I do like the sound of the Ilmor V10's in a boat too

Like he said, you don't know Joey Griffin.
You should see some of the stuff he built - like the motors that hold the kilo record. . . .

A.You cant insure a turbine boat ,Markel wont do it thus rendering them basically worthless in the resale market.

B.You can purchase 5 +years of new 1200 hp engines and a few #6 drives for the cost of one new high hp turbine.

C.We have run our 565CI 1300+hp Methanol injected mills with 1471 high Helix blowers for over 120hrs now and we just leaked them down at less than 10%. Not as many hrs per hp as a turbine, but if built, maintained and run correctly you can get many seasons from todays big hp Marine mills between rebuilds.

thanks Glen - wonderful insight based on real facts.

Did any of you watch the Ms Geico SHows? They pull those turbines out every race !!! They specifically said that Turbines DON"T like salt water. Just my 2 cents, for what its worth.

You have got that right. Randy puts a lot of time and attention into each one. I wish I could afford one!!! Tell Frank congratulations for me.

Do you know when the boat is going to be done?

I used to work on F-16's. Crew Chief actually and my brother was an engine mechanic. Granted, not nearly the same motor by any means, but the basic mechanics are the same. They run a long time at very high RPM, but they must be very well cared for, are VERY expensive to maintain and fuel. GREAT concept if you got the cash I guess, but takes a specialty person to work on them too.
