Can I hang out here since I own a scarab?

Here is my new toy.

Just picked up a 4.3L V6 Mercury to drop in her.

Hey I only have a 21' Scarab 1. Any Scarab is welcomed here. We have to stick together, the last of a dying bread of great sportboats.

My thoughts......I may have the smallest, shortest ride on the water, but it still has the longest line to get aboard :)

The Sprint was available as a jet boat (225HP Penta) or with Mercruiser power. The 3.0L and 4.3L were offered in the sterndrive packages. If you have your sights on the 4.3L then you'll be much happier, I have the 3.0L setup and it runs great and is economical albeit slow (as expected). There were a couple different interiors offered, I have the standard interior with the controls on the starboard side. The hull responds well to a set of SX Smart Tabs and a decent SS prop. The closed bow makes a nice home for a marine subwoofer. All in all its a great economical boat with style, much better than cruising in a cookie cutter open bow for the same money.

That really is a shame bro... You keepin' it scarab for the next one?

I'm going crazy gathering parts for mine. Just pulled the drive and ordered what I need for the 1.50 gears...HD bearing and shims.

You and I had the same ordeal getting into these sprints...bottom paint...3.0l...I was hoping we could have a build-off and and post some pics and see who wins...LOL

We best of luck to ya with selling it. You shouldn't have trouble...gas is its way back up.

take care of the skies for us bro!!!

Scarab's Little Squirt

I am the proud owner of Scarab's Little Squirt - 19" jet
Just wanted to join this group and say Hi

I have noticed a slight knock at idle - any thoughts on that?
Going to do some research and take a better look at it this weekend - Had it at Havasu last weekend and noticed it late in the day at the launch ramp

Thanks - Barb

BabyScarab, I would appreciate anymore insight you have on putting on a set of Smart Tabs. How they affected your acceleration, handling, and top speed? My main concern is not loosing any of my top speed. Right now I hitting 60 with a 4.3L, 4 brl carb, and Revolution 4 stainless prop.

Also any pictures of the installed?

Thanks, and glad to see there are other enthusiasts enjoying these great boats.

Just spoke to the friend that bought my Scarab sprint.

He ripped out the 4.3 liter and put in a 350 V8!

 :laugher:

Can't wait to go for a ride in it.

He got all the bottom paint off and had the interior all re-done.

Looks real nice.

:)

A 350 in this hull is a recipe for disaster, unless you're talking about lots of aluminum. I've seen a few of them done, and none of them handled well, unless there was a very light chop (like 3 inches). Just too much weight in the back end of the little boat.

MPM - I'd have to dig up some pics of the installed SX Smart Tabs, but I installed them per the instructions and put them pretty far outboard on the hull so I could clear the bunks on my trailer and match them between strakes in the hull. When installed properly, they greatly improved my holeshot (remember I had the anemic 3.0L) and allowed for good cruising in the middle RPMs. They greatly reduced porpoising at all RPMs. They won't negatively impact top end speed at all when properly installed, they'll just get outta they way as you build speed, and full compress the actuator. They allowed me to run a small diameter (13 7/8") 23P 3-blade wheel while still keeping my RPMs clean on the little Mercruiser. It was a 50mph boat with that setup.

Since I only had the 3.0L and boated with light loads, I went with the 60lb actuators, not sure if you'd want 80lb actuators or not. If you call the place you actually get to speak with the owner and he can help you on install/application questions.

Good Luck and nice setup, that''s a very clean Sprint and it looks like it runs great.

Thanks BabyScarab, I love to see the pics if you come across them. I bought a set of the stainless tabs with 80lb actuators. I also picked up their lifting brackets, so trailering should not be a problem. I can't find a bad thing written about them, and am excited to give them a shot. The boat is in storage, so it'll be spring before I throw them on.
