32' vs. 35'...opinions

im contemplating possibly selling mine and moving up to either a 32' or 35'. i do a lot of local boating on lake erie but want to be able to handle the rough stuff better on runs when the lake kicks up (although im happy with the way the 29' pq handles).

i guess im looking for opinions from members who have or have had 32-35' boats. id be looking for pretty much a stock fuel injected boat...pretty much like i have now only bigger. mid to late 90's to about '00-'01.

in the 32' range i really like the dominators and im not sure bout the 35's...probably leaning towards a cafe racer.

i guess im wondering if there is a huge difference in ride quality between the 32 and 35 but i know a lot of it depends on hull design and weight.

just looking for some thoughts incase i get a bigger itch to sell. who knows, i may keep it two more years but i sure would like to step up.

i have a feeling that when in doubt...the answer will be to buy a 35'!! :)

thanks

Not sure if this helps but when I was shopping for my boat. I was given independent advice by a number of experienced boaters to stay away from boats in the 31/32 foot length. Keep in mind where I boat, the Chesapeake Bay.

Just by moving up 2 feet would make all the difference in the world, was the claim of these people. They did continue to say, "the longer the better" when it came to boating in the Chesapeake.

The wave action in the bay is such that a 31 foot boat can actually be rougher than a 29 foot boat was their claim.

I didn't take this information to any actual tests with a fleet of boats, all I can say is my boat is 34 feet 5 inches and handles anything the Chesapeake can dish out.

a Dominator SS is the way to go, they are awesome in the rough, and have a big cabin, I think the 290 is bigger than a regular dominator.
my friend has a dominator but im not sure if it's an SS or not. its a 2000 and i dont know how many different models they offered in the dominator line in '00.
everything on his is bigger plus he put a few on a few goodies.

The 2000 would be a standard Dominator, not the SS. The SS has about a foot more freeboard, faster stepped bottom and an enclosed head....

thx matt. i like my buddy's '00 but i do like the looks of more freeboard on those boats.

Personally I think the standard Dominator looks much better and sleeker than the SS. Just my opinion.
I love my Dominator and can't see getting rid of it anytime soon. I have put WAY too much $$$$$ into it at this point so it's not going anywhere. :winker:

What year did Sunsation start making the Dominator SS?
I've been told the same thing about Lake MI as you were about the Chesapeak - bigger is better. I've been told that 34' or more is what you really need to handle the waves in an offshore boat on Lake MI. I don't have any first hand experience riding in 2 different offshore boats to say. I do know that a 41' cruiser handles the waves a lot better than 35, 32 and 30' cruisers. My 21'er really takes a pounding if I try to go out in the rough stuff.

My 32 does alright on Lake Michigan but 4 footers on Lake Michigan means they will be spanned 40 feet apart because of how deep Lake Michigan is. Saint Clair is so shallow that even on rough days the waves are much closer together so you can skip across the tops of them much easier.

Theres going to be a huge difference on ride between the Sunsation and the Cigarette. For your range check out the 32 Active Thunders, 33 Powerplays, 35 Formulas, and the 35 Cigarette's.

In what way? If it is true it might be due to those boats probably being heavier. However, lighter usually means faster.

The 35 Cigarette is like a 38ft boat compared to a 32 sunsation. It's all around much much bigger but it is slower by it does weigh more. But the Cigarette is going to have a much better ride in any water conditions. Those others mentioned are lighter non step boats except the formula and will have better rides than the Sunsation due to the fact that they are bigger boats overall. Not putting down sunsation in any way but there arnt really any 32ft boats like them out there so you can only compare them to bigger or smaller boats. I have seen and run next to only the 32 SS's in some slop and it didnt look like they were doing so well. it was probably the driver not the boat though. Just an observation and my .02

Scott's Dominator was running pretty good through some slop and his is the regular Dom not the Dom SS. It has less freeboard, but it is FAST. If we could every get the video from the Spectre cat, then we could show you how it handled even with one non-functional trim tab.

I have personally seen the 32 SS run near several Dominators with different water conditions... Didn't really see a difference, BUTTTTTT the Cigs are LONG gone when it gets rough... There is a Bullet new to the River near me, and he appears to be running with the best of them, kept up with me on more than one occasion... But RS catches up with the 30and less boats in the rough... :) :winker: as I go past having my martini... :bandit:

My 32 Hustler handles the crap just fine. it's a short season up here, so you better have something that can run in it or you'll spend a lot of time at the dock. but, bigger is usually better in the crap, and there is a lot to be said for mass. That's why big Formula's, cig's, & Apache's may not be the fastest hulls, but can also run well when it kicks up.

What's rough and what is not is just opinions unless you are running with other boats at the same time. I will say my 34 Sutphen can run in some rough stuff at 55 with a finger on the wheel. I just love the stabilities of it. Now I am still chicken sh!t to see what the boat can really do but more time on the water with this one and I will get her up there.

The ride of the SS blows away the standard Dominator and its a wave crusher in comparison and a faster hull, its definitely going to be seriously looked at for my next boat.
