I have a 2006 Formula 271 with the standard 496 375 hp engine...why am I limited to 4800 rpm's on this engine when big blocks can easily go to 6000 rpm ? Top speed is 57-58 with the 24 pitch bravo one prop.....

Stock merc engines are built for a happy medium of performance and reliability. Motors and outdrives don't last long at 6K RPMs.

Because the peak power is in the 4600-4800 rpm range so there is no reason to spin it any faster.

Big blocks don't easily go to 6k for very long. There would be no point to raise your rpms, you aren't going to be anymore thrilled with going 60mph then where you are now and the reliability drops drastically. My 375's are never going to see more than 4700 rpms.
