502 vs 454

so from what i have been reading the 502 and 454 use the same heads etc. I asked in a different thread if my exhaust openings in the transom would be the same and everyone answered yes. So im currious where the 502 gets the extra cubes. I thought that the 502 would have been a taller deck therfore allowing the extra cubes but if the exhaust positioning doesent change then that cant be the case. I assumed it was kinda like a 302 and 351w. They are pretty much the same engine but the 351 just has a taller deck allowing more stroke which = more cubes.


whats the deal.

So...let me throw this out....I have a gen VI 454 Mag MPI. (2001). If this mill takes a dump, what would have to be done to replace with a502. Looks to me like the heads, exhaust, all the bolt ons are the same. So would a simple ECU flash be all that is necessary?

Just askin'....or better yet, what would you gurus consider replacing the mag with? Would like to stay EFI if possible, just want to add a few ponies to her.

I don't know what/if anything would need to be done with the ECU, but as far as the motor it's as simple as;
disconnect old motor
lift out
lift new motor in
bolt down.

That is what I thought....So, if I was to find a 502 shortblock, I can use my fresh 454 mag heads, all the bolt ons (alt, w/p, alt, power steering, etc) and increase my H/P by 40?

Then..... :blush: add a small blower, Hmmmmm my mouth is starting to water :winker:

I was faced with same dilemma when my 454 went south. I ended up saving the money (not upgrading to 502 shortblock) and used it to stroke my 454 into a 496 with a 177 blower. All forged internals, custom blower cam and blower pistons, yielding 600-650 hp.

Or you go this route Stock looking 502 with 540ci - 600 hp and 630 lbs torque
