I have a 1987 Chris Craft stinger 202 boat with a 205hp V6, Im switching to a V8, im shooting for 450hp (+/- 25). My question is will an Alpha one unit hold it? I know its rated for 300hp, but like many things you can over power them or build it to handle the power. How much power will it hold? All I want is to increase top speed. Im not a crazy driver or going to be doing full throttle hole shots out of the water. I'm also not going to be drag racing. My only purpose is to go from Tampa to Edmont key faster. I would like 70-80mph, I have 55mph now with the V6. What are your thought on the alpha one drive. With it hold up or not. If it wont, what gos bad? universal joints? gears? How long will an alpha last under these condition 1 season? Im not looking for precies responses, I know its hard to say, just give me some idea's of what to expect.

Thanks

Ben

the answer is: possibly yes. I owned a 1987 222 Stinger with a 454/330 hp engine mated to an Alpha drive and the prior owner ran it for four years without blowing up the alpha drive - why didn't it blow up?

1. he ran on a lake - smooth water - never launched the boat
2. the boat is very light and did not put too much of a strain on the alpha.

I never ran it that way, because as soon as I bought it I put in a 625 HP Whippled charged 454 and installed a bravo drive.

so - good luck and remember - NO HOLE SHOTS!

ps: the prior owner said the boat would run about 60 mph with the 454/330 hp combo.

I would think with good maintenance and just normal usage they should last you along time. There are some other threads about this and i want to say there is someone running a 406 sbc with like 500 hp with an alpha. :) my boat has twin 350's bone stock though alphas and my boat is HEAVY they have lasted 583 hrs

I looked around today at some alpha parts one factor in determining weather the gears will survive is what ratio you have. the gears are smaller behind the v6 2.00to1 then a 1.63to1 v8 set there is a big difference between them
