alpha one shift lever question

1st timer with working with a drive, so just letting you know in advance...
split the upper and lower to change the impeller, since the drive is off the boat due to having the bellows changed, how do i go about indexing the shift shaft between the upper and lower unit to make sure it will be right once the drive is back together? The manual I have only gave instructions for when the drive is still installed on the boat. Thanks.. btw if anyone has pics of where the foward position is on the shift shaft where it meets the bell that would be great also..

Maybe reading this will help you better than me explaining it. Just remember The shifter need to be in forward when removing and installing the drive! The info you will need is towards the bottom of the article!

thanks, will check it out... putting it in shifter in foward will do nothing until i get the drive on, i installed a new cable while changing the shift bellows, and i cant adjust it until the drive is installed.. If you know of a better way let me know.. Thanks!
On the lower unit, turn the lower shift shaft to the full Clock-wise position (this is the forward gear position) and turn the prop Counter-Clock-wise to make sure it's fully engaged into the forward gear.
Now on the upper unit, make sure the shifter paw ( this is the piece that engages your bell housing) is pointed (facing) straight Forward.
Now when your ready to assemble both halves together, turn the prop Counter-Clock-wise again to index the splines on the lower drive shaft to the upper unit..and make sure the shifter paw has'nt changed position and is still pointing straight.
Before your ready to install the outdrive, move your shifter at the helm all the way forward, and make sure the shifter paw is still facing straight forward as you install the outdrive back to the bell housing...

what do you do if the shifter cable isnt hooked up yet? since i just replaced the cable and bellows, it is not hooked up yet, according to the book i have it says the cable cant be adjusted until the drive is installed.
