I started rewiring the engine to the gauges but ran into a slight problem. The alternator has a ground and one battery connection... I am not sure where to tie the purple wire on the alt for the battery gage. Previous owner had it tape up. The wiring in the service manual shows other connections on the alt. I am guessing the alt was change somewhere down the line. It looks to be a marine alt. Any suggestions.

That Purple wire does'nt go to the ALT. Some wiring harnesses have that purple dead ended and taped, it's not always used on all boats, but it's sometimes used for an oil pressure switch (alarm I think).
