Corroded pulleys

687 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Supernovathree
I have the '89 5.7 liter mercruiser in my boat, the pulleys have become corroded and worn causing the belts to prematurely wear and leave fine black shavings all over the bilge. I want to remove the pulleys and sand them down and paint them up. How hard is it to remove them. I know the power steering pulley is a press on. I think the alternator and circulating pump are bolt on. and what about the pulley over the harmonic balancer? is that bolt on as well ? I was thinkin some sanding and a highgrade paint might do the trick. what do you guys think ?

Not as hard as getting them sanded down, I can tell you that. :(
I would think sand blasting would be the best trick
Powder coat

I had mine powder coated for $10 a piece. I bought chrome alt's for $99. only way to go. autozone will loan a puller for ps pump. go ahead and have brackets done too!

I tried that. Apparently, it requires more air than my compressor puts out.

if you decide to have them powdercoated which i recommend. They will be able to sand blast them for you. The time and pain you will save yourself by having them sand blasted will be priceless..

how have they held up since powder coating?
after powdercoating the belts don't even wear the finish in the grooves
