Why are the shorepower "adapters" so dam expensive?

I've spliced 30A cords for extended length and use one to feed power into my home with a backup generator....I had to tie the circuits together to go from a 3 prong to a 4 prong to catch all the circuits, so I have basic electrical knowledge. Is their some sort of ":step-down" in these adapter cords or is it a matter of connecting the "A" wire to the proper "A" wire and therefore you can make your own?
