Engine coupler: aftermarket or Mercruiser??

Hey guys,

I have a 7.4 with a Bravo One and I blew the coupler on it last week-end. Looked arond on the net for info and I was expecting to find the big round style coupler when taking it appart.

To my surprise, it was the triangle model, the one usualy listed for smaller block and Alpha drive.

Now I've been shopping around a bit and for the big round style couple (part # 861523A 9 from Merc) they want 560 $ Cnd and for the part # 18-2412 from Sierra, I can get it for 450$ Cnd. I am also trying to find out how much would it cost to get it shipped up here.

Now the real thing is that for the same coupler from Sierra, I can get from the state via eBay at 295 $ US.

I would thik that the one made by Sierra would be fine, and if its the case it is probably worth it to get it from the States, depending on the extra cost .

Would you go for an after market considering there is that much difference in price, since our money is at par?

Thanks.

I have had to replace both with in the last 18 months (lucky me) but did not go with Merc and have seen no difference and the warranty was for a year on the new ones.
For the amount of work it takes to replace a coupler (pulling motor)....I would just buy OEM. If it was an easy to replace, easily accessable part I wouldn't hesitate to go Sierra.

It's up to you if you want to gamble or not.
I also had the triangle one, replaced with a round OEM one on ebay for 1/2 the price.

Yea, that's exactly what I'm going to do. I'm putting the Sierra part number 18-2412.
I have a used Merc coupler I'd sell for $100.00. It came from a motor that was in a boat that fell off a trailer; I don't need the coupler. Perfect condition.
Try www.ebasicpower.com

I have one from there in my boat without any problems.
