I think they are splashes of the 16 and 18 Donzi Classics. I saw one last week.

they ara and they are priced lower than the donzis obviously via thier name!

i am going to be in the search for a boat around this time next year-i want to add something along the lines of a 17' boat that i can have as a beater, and this looked promising.

i would nt mind a checkmate with an outbored or even a sweet sixteen or a flat bottom boat. my otions are open but i do plan on something.
It was the only boat test I recall by Powerboat that deemed a boat dangerous and advised the public against buying.

Yup. I seem to remember reading the same story.
MAYBE DUE TO THE ROUNDED HULL AT THE STERN??

I NEVER READ THE ARTICLE SO I AM IN THE DArk here

No, that's not it. My 1970 Donzi 18 2+3 has the rounded keel...
when those U 17 and 19's came out....I knew a few people that bought them.

They were a very good little boat for the money and as far as I know the owners did not have any problems. I remember reading a write up by one of the mags and they gave it a great review.

I remember running along side a 17 with the bigger motor (I can't remember what it was) and putting a GPS to it and the speed was right around 57-58 mph because the factory was advertising +60mph

I believe most came with volvos.

Beat me to it Too Old....you are correct.
I believe Boating as well..
They are not direct splashes of the Donzi hulls either... close, but no. Don't handle like a Donzi.. won't handle the power that the Donzi hulls will. Powerboat gave it a HUGE thumbs down... and they love Donzi's... that should be a clue right there.

That may be exactly why they gave it the thumbs down.
Finding lots of good older threads!

They are not splashes of Donzi Hulls. And they are not dangerous. There is a story behind that article. Basically the boat was set up for an experienced driver with the limit switches bypassed and they put the boat on it's side because they tucked the drive to far down in a turn.

A U17 with a 5.0 MPI will run 60-61 and a U19 with a 5.8 MPI will run 64-65. They will chine walk with the duoprop but they also accelerate like a slingshot! Fair trade in my opinion.

They all came with Volvos.

Never been in a Classic 18 so I can't comment about the handling compared to a Donzi. But they handle chop great and big water EXTREMELY well! In fact, I would bet they handle big water better than a Classic 18.

VERY INTERESTING-

but since this thread debuted, I have changed gears and am in the process of selling a condo and buying a house, so a second boat will have to wait a few more years now! But at least the current one has since been paid for!
Yeah, I know how the house thing goes! I am actually thinking about picking up a U19 if i can find the right one. That's how I stumbled accross this thread.

Are you from MI?
Yes I am you...

My spare boat money is going to go into updating a kitchen!
we boat out of salt river anchor bay area.....

but as soon as we move-st clair shores from chesterfield-I will be boating from the nautical mile. we do a few trips a year up north. too.
I knew Chesterfield was in MI, but I wasn't sure if there were others. I do 90% of my boating on Torch Lake.
rock on....

If all goes well I will be there in august for a long weekend. I love it up there. My brother used to live right in down town elk rapids while he was stationed at air station traverse city uscg. I absolutely lkove it up there. I have another reall closse friend that lives right between lake ann and long lake. between glen, lealanuae, the bay, torch chain, crystal and charlevoix that is some of the best boating around!

heres a pic you can appreciate!
