From 454 330 hp to 496 Ho 425 hp ??

Hi Guys

I have a 1988 242 SS with 1997 454 330 hp bravo 1. The engine is out of the boat beeing rebuild.

I have been offered a brand new 496 HO to a very interresting price

What will I gain (exept of course a brand new and bigger engine). Top speed? Accleration? Crusingspeed? Fuel consume? Durabiltiy? Are some of the questiones I would like to have some feedback on.

Do anyone have an 242 SS or LS with a 496 Ho???
Is it a good package?

What do you think about buying a brand new engine, and install it in a old boat like mine? Will I ever get some of the investment back??

I can't answer any of your questions, but I wanted to say your boat looks cool! Any more pics? I think a 496 in it would be awesome though.

I have a boat 10 years older than yours, with the original Merc260 in it. If/when this engine needs replacing, I'd consider putting a higher powered small block in it.

When it come yo the 496 I am sure it is a good engine, what I need to consider is it cost almost as mouch as I paid for the boat
I have already ordred a complete rebuild of my 454, and I will get 6 mnds waranty
The boat is a nice 1988 with upgrading potential

So what I need now is of course some more adwises. feedback and some hard facts about the performance of Formula 242 SS or LS with a 496 Ho engine

330hp to 425hp if its reasonable its a no brainer and should be a nice gain, 365hp runs 59mph give or take 1 so the 425 should get u into the low 60's plus the peace of mind with fresh stock power

If you have a bravo drive that is healthy and your hull is sound I would do it if the engine truly is a good deal. Remember some of the accessories will need to be changed out too.

Hell yes. Do it. You will need to alter the engine mounts and exhaust hole locations
but it will be worth it.

The only thing I will add to the thread is, I have twin 496 power in my 330SS. They are the most fuel efficient power I have owned. Lots of other 496 owners on this forum will back up my claim.

I would do it.................oh wait I am doing it.

Well my 496 is modified a little more to over 500hp but I am hoping to finish my project in a 242SS.

I don't look at it as an investment that I am needing money out of. It is more like, this is my enjoyment and with new power I can enjoy more.

Pull the trigger and do it, I don't think you would have any regrets. Then you can sell the 454 to gain back some expense.
