Gimbal Lockup?!?

Took the boat out today and started to hear the typical gimbal bearing gone bad noise. I headed back to the dock and the noise ofcourse started to get real bad. I dropped down to no wake speed and before I got to the dock the engine quit. Now it doesn't start. I'm pretty sure the engine is good, but my question is this: Is it possible that a seized gimbal bearing could stall the motor and cause it not to turn over? Any experience with something like that? Thanks for any insite.

I do not know if a seized gimbal bearing would stop an engine but, I bet and bad outdrive could...D
I thought of that, but the engine prop still spins in netural but the boat still won't start. That's why I thought of the gimbal bearing beause it was making some noise that got worse big time before I could make it back to the dock.

Quickest way to find out is pop the outdrive off . It has to come off either way. Then see if the engine cranks.
I'm going to pull the drive off in a little while. I had figured that no mater what it would have to come off anyway.

If the gimbal bearing siezed up the input shaft would just spin inside the bearing.

If your engine locked up and won't turn over - pull the drive and then try to start the engine - if it starts and runs fine the problem is in the drive.

MY money is on the drive.

Well here's an update:
Took an extended lunch today and took the boat to R&L Marine in Livonia (he has done work for me in the past) and told him the story. He pulled the drive and the motor started. That was the only high point today. The gimbal bearing does need to be replaced but who ever has their ca$h on the drive was right. I smoked the upper gear case gears and broke a tooth off. That lodged and locked up the drive. Since I don't know the history of the drive the shop is suggesting that I also reseal the entire drive while repairing. Here's the breakdown:
Upper Gear Set 462.95
Lower Seal Kit 56.00
Water Pump Impeller 38.95
U-Joint Bellows 66.95
Water Tube 10.98
Shift Bellows Kit 86.95 (including cable)
Gimble Bearing 66.00
Lube/Misc 29.95

Labor:
R&R & Repair Upper Unit 360.00
Clean and Reseal Lower Unit 240.00
R&R Bellows 260.00
R&R Gimbal Bearing N/C

Is it that hard to replace a bellows on a Alpha drive? Mt old OMC was a piece of cake. Am I getting taken for a ride? Any help would be great! Thanks in advance!

I've changed the shift cable on an Alpha last season. No big deal. The drive bellows can't all that hard to change. Just take your time and be sure it's sealed real good.
And the guys are right, you can buy a rebuilt drive for about what the yard is charging you to fix what you have.

I don't really want to go through eBay because your never really sure what your going to get. I checked out Doug Russell but that link is for the lower unit only. If I got the entire drive it's 1995.00 or the upper unit (the one I blew) for 1395.00 and I would still have to reseal the lower unit and clean it out. I'm also worried about the bellows, I'm sure I can do it (I've done it on my OMC) but I've read they are a pain in the *** on earlier Alpha drives. The last thing is the gimbal bearing. I dont want to spend the $$$ but the biggest factor out of all of this is TIME. Something we all never have enough of. Were working so many hours now I would almost rather spend the money, get a warranty, and be able to spend time with the wife and kids.
