How much engine for new boat?

I bought a 95 Sea Ray 220 Signature Select bowrider with a cracked block and am currently changing the standard 454 with another 95 454 mag core that I bought to build. I am curious how much power I should build the mag to. I was thinking 425 to 450 hp. Is that a good power level for this boat? I have never had it in the water.

I currently have a 95 Mariah Z200 w/ a 350 that runs 53 on the speedo. I am hoping to get about 65+ with the new boat, but I am worried it may be too much. Any thoughts? TIA

Bravo drive? I'd say up to 500hp if so. Should be a fun time like that. :)
A stock 454 will push your 220 to it's limits.

That is what I am afraid of. I have a set of Dart II Merlin heads I am building for this motor because the core I bought had an eroded exhaust port on one head. I was also going to convert to a roller cam for about 5400 rpm. But if it is too much, I will just put a hydraulic cam back in it. So what hp level should I build to for this boat? It weighs 4000 lbs. and has a Bravo I.
I had a 24' Baja Outlaw with a built up 454........450hp 475lbs torque. No issues.
It might just run real good with 450 hp, and it MAY handle it just fine , Myself, i wouldn't go much past 450. but thats just me. You see what i Ride :laugher: A cruiser
Well, you don't hear people say "I have TOO MUCH power" very often. You can always go lighter on the throttle. But, the more HP you build, the greater the chances of reliability issues.

Very true, I would hate to build it and want more afterward. I can build a solid, reliable 450 hp engine within my budget. So I think that will be my plan. I just saw my boat is not exactly like a lot of the boats on here, and thought there may be a reason. But no one has really expressed too much concern, so 450 it is.

Ditto. I'm the oddball as well. Doesnt stop me from trying stuff.
Stroke it to a 496 and keep it mild everywhere else.
That way IF you decide to build it up you have the bottom end DONE and just need to bump up the cam and heads.

If you have too much HP you can always de-tune it to a reasonable level and bump it up as you feel the need.
