When filling your Bravo outdrive?? Why did Merc put the drain/fill behind the prop?

I drained and filled this morning....when removing the pump/hose from the outdrive, the new oil evacuated from the lower unit with authrority....WTF?! Nothing like trying to start the threads of the plug when you are getting covered in stinking green goo! What is the trick? I know if it drained the old oil this fast I would be a happy man....

Frigging snowed today! B

Once I drained my fluid not realizing it had filled my skeguard (one of those polished skeg covers) as I drained. Next time I put the boat in the water it looked like an oil tanker had rn aground. I thought m drive was cracked or somthing and people were giing me all kinds of nasty looks.

Oh yea...top plug was replaced....then of course you keep pumping till the aux res on the engine is filling....helps to remove the cap from the aux res too to releave the pressure...but it still blew all over! HA! Oh well, it is done and the mess is cleaned. Baby has been put to bed for the winter :(

I am in the process of replacing the stupid slotted screw with an allen head. Much easier to line up and start the threads.
I thought of that but haven't seen any. Haven't looked that hard for them either  . I figured I'd buy a new slotted one and tack an allen head to it.

Any one sell them with allen heads BadDog?

I use a screw starter to R&R the drain screw. That one of those screw bits that has the spring loaded tip that you twist and locks into the slot. So far it has kept spills to a min. No way to avoid not spilling any with the drives down. I agree the allen heads would be nice, but you will loose the magnet that is part of the original plugs.

The hotter it is out the more I spill. Early spring/late fall temps makes the fluid thicker and less apt to gush out.

I made a drive fill set up that has minimized the leakage.

BTW: always put a drain bucket underneath the drive.

I think you are pressurizing the system by filling the reservoir that way. Just fill until it come out the vent hole, replace that plug then unhook hose and replace bottom plug. Then fill the reservoir.

Clamp the resevoir off before changing with vice grips....

I know....stunk up the whole garage. That and gas...I love it.

Another question..what is the trick to removing the oil filter, which Mercruiser was so nice to mount in such a manner that causes oil to frigging dump everywhere when you loosten it?? WHy mount a oil filter upside down??? I wrapped it in a old towel and didn't make a mess, but I did trash a good rag....

Fuel filter is mounted the right way ( thank god)

After draining the oil out of the pan turn the engine over without spark(pull either tether or coil wire) a few revolutions. Did that with my old boat and it helped to empty the filter.

Unspin the filter just enough to release the seal. You will know because you will be able to rock the filter ever so slightly. Let it drain like this for 15 minutes (if oil is warm) and you will be able to complete unscrew and remove. ;)

I use the bottom of a plastic 1/2 gal soda bottle.... about 1/3 of it.... put it under the filter & let the oil drain into that.... also a disposable diaper is great.... put it under the filter (or over the drain area) those suckers can absorb the whole filter full :D
