A couple of months ago I read an article in Powerboat about a 5 blade prop Mercury Marine was introducing at the Miami Boat Show. Powerboat tested a prototype and got some impressive results. The prop increased acceleration without sacrificing top end. I was just wondering if anyone has heard any new news about the 5 blade or possibly even tried one.

Got two ordered and waiting.

These props would want to be much more expensive than the Bravo ones. I read the same article and to be honest, wasn't impressed at all! I don't think there was one mph difference in top speed. And honestly guys, who cares about a little better acceleration? It's all top speed. The article even went on to say unless you had a stop watch, you wouldn't notice the difference. I don't think it was a fair test. I think they should be tested on a boat like Dragon hearts. Something that has all kinds of speed, and can benefit from another blade. Let us know what you find Chris.

Canada Jeff, I disagree. I'm all for top speed, but I only go for top end every once in a while. I come on plane and accelerate every time I move my boat. The Powerboat test did show considerable improvements in time to plane and acceleration.

Steve I think we are saying the same thing, I'm all for top speed to! when the mag did it's test on hole shot, they were from a dead stop to full throttle! Who does that? people with a spare dive waiting for them I guess. Time to plane (to me) isn't that important. I come up slow and easy anyway. Replaced to many drives to be testing full throddle hole shots. As for acceleration, yah its great to have more, but top speed is more important. Now don't get me wrong, all I'm saying is it should be tested again, at higher speeds. And if then not much difference, than the price of this new prop should reflect this.

They may work well in specialized applications...like when someone switched to the 2" shorty drives and neads as much "bite" as possible getting out of the hole. Maybe this could have solved Dragonheart's problem of prop blowout with the 2" shorties?

Thats what I mean heatwave. For the average guy doing 70 or even 80 with twin screw, isn't a real good test (so far). I would like to see a test on some thing faster, more extreme. Thats where this prop should do well. Because so far, from that articles results, if I where to switch over, I don't think I would see or feel any diff!

My cat has a high X dimension. If I give much throttle at all during planing, I blowout the prop. I think more bite would benefit me, but I would like to see more testing. I would deffinately try one on my boat before I purchased.

Mark,
That was mine. Thanks.
As soon as I get the props I'll post the results. Got 34's and 36's that should be on the way.
