Considering toning down the exhaust and wondering pro's and con's of mufflers vs. turn downs. I like turn downs but worried about waves surging while swimming at the beach.

I've been running mufflers AND turndowns on mine for several years without ANY problems......

My mufflers have the "flappers" on them inside the turndowns so water comming in isn't an issue..

It's a little too quiet for me at idle... sounds like a [email protected] Sea Ray or something...83 db at idle.. :winker:

Once on plane it sounds GOOD and you can even hear the stereo (and the wife yelling) in the boat now...

Idle...

Ta hell with mufflers and turndowns KEEP IT LOUD :4gears:

:iagree:
Agree!!! But unfortunately some States won't even let you launch your boat from the ramp if your boat doesn't have mufflers or has switchable exhaust. :unhappy1:

Boatally Insane I think your set up is something I am looking for. Where can I find those in a 4" set up?
Still like the sound of open exhaust but trying to do my part to keep a positive image for power boaters along with trying to keep the water patrol off my back!

Yeah I just got busted on the water for too much noise, scored a 95 dbls. :angry1: The law is 90dbl. Im looking at inserts too. Im worried about back pressure though, is that an issue or not? Ive got a 454mag 420hp.

I got my exhaust from GGB.... http://ggb.ca/
I dyno'd with and without them and saw NO difference in H.P. whatsoever... :)

However, they stopped making "marine" exhaust a couple of years ago...

The last time I talk to them they were going to start production again soon but don't know if they have yet...

You might also want to look into Gibson's products..

I've heard nothing but good things about their mufflers and they make "turndowns" as well...http://www.gibsonmarine.com/

The thing I like BEST about how mine is set up is my mufflers are "transom mount" ones and the downtubes are clamped on, so I easily remove them if I want to be a bit louder... :winker:

im running a set of inserts in my CMIs and it toned it down quite a bit, and you can see them up inside so the boy in blue at the launch wont give ya a hard time.

it still has a good rumble and is loud on plane but much better than it was 600hp w/dry cmis

I ran thoughs before they took the bark out of the sound of the motor and a little power on top end. It did feel like it had a little more low end power. My wife hated it and made me take them off. Now I have switched the firing order and the boat sounds almost the same as it did running mufflers
