If any of you followed my drama of trying to find suitable insurance for my old powerboat, you know my story.

Briefly: Cannot find anyone who will insure a 20 year old performance boat.
I did get a confirmed quote from Markel. Premium is $2400 per year with $2500 deductible for a $45K value on boat. In case of theft, ded. is $5000. They confirmed that they would indeed carry the policy as long as survey was suitable.
I passed...that is just TOO MUCH for insurance on an old boat.

Progressive quoted $1350 per year with a $1750 ded, but here`s the catch---- boat value of $20K max.
I went ahead and signed with Progressive and continued to search.

After an exhaustive and fruitless search, I have determined that Markel is the only company in the world that will take this boat on. I just cannot bring myself to pay that much money for "mediocre" insurance though.

I talk to my State Farm agent to inform her that I will be pulling ALL of my business from her and going to Progressive. My home, car, truck and RV.
She wants me to give her yet another chance.

She called me today and told me that State Farm will indeed give me insurance for my old boat.
$1230 per year, $1500 ded, $45K value.
I signed the papers and now I am FULLY insured !!!

Just wonder why it took threatening to pull my business before they would ante up ?

I Need to ask seeing I have a 29 Twin Engine Scarab with State Farm;

How Fast Is your boat? (I was stuck in the 65mph+ book)

What Size Engines? (I Only have 350/300Hp, This may have saved me)

What year boat is your?

And Boat weight? (They did ask me this? Not sure why, maybe if I ran into another boat to see how much damage I would do)

I'm Paying only 487. yr (With a Lay-Up)

Seems strange that Ins can change so much from State to State.. I understand a little but almost triple..

did you try global marine insurance out of traverse city michigan>>>?
I will just say this: I spent approximately 2 hours per day for about 7 straight days searching the internet, talking to agents, faxing applications, etc....

I firmly believe that I have talked to everyone.

But yes, I did in fact, talk to Global. Guess what ? DENIED ! Reason: Boat is too old.

65 mph
Twin 420 hp (840 hp)
1986
5800 lbs

The AGE is the BIG factor here....

Just for kicks, they plugged in all my info, but changed year model to 1996. The premium dropped to $550 year.

When my ins company asked how fast the boat would go i said it would do 60 plus right now but soon it will go faster, she said NO it will only do 60. :D She has always taken care of me .
That is an agent who needs to rethink how they do business!!!! Falsifying insurance will get you no coverage in the event of an accident. Is it really worth it to save a few bucks???

My agent was very adament about disclosing everything. She took several photos of the engine compartment and drives.
I just hope your agent will stand behind you if you have a claim denied because of false info.

Now go do the same with your cell phone carrier. I just called and threatened to disconnect. Just call and tell them you want to cancel your service. They transfer you to the "retention" person. I got a new fancy phone and they dropped my rate 25%. Everything is negotiable!

Who is your carrier? Last time I tried that they said OK no problem, that will be $200. I actually paid the $200 to get rid of my service with T-mobile and went back to VZW.

I'd still be looking to change.

SF doesn't deserve your business. I went through the same thing with them. I've had the same SF agent for 20 years with my autos, home, motorcyles, umbrella, etc. They wrote me a boat policy and it got rejected by the underwriters. The agent tried hard but underwriters wouldn't reconsider, even for a 20 year loyal customer with only 2 minor claims.

I'll be changing to a different insurance company as my policies expire. Good riddens SF.

Went through the same hassle with state farm. They wrote a poilicy and underwriters rejected it. A couple month long hassle before they totally rejected boat coverage due to there policy that states "they will not insure High performance boats". Got tired of fighting and went with Marine underwriters. No problems.

Hey , I went through the same thing with my boat a 96 32 velocity with a single 572 . #5 drive . I went through 3 different companies and a couple wanted to just put it in as twin 330 and fudge stuff . It took a little while but a local state farm agent put everything down and took pics and i have a descent premium of just under $800 but no gimmicks to worry about . Curt

Auto Owners insurance has been very good to us but we don't make claims every year. I think the last time we had a claim was 5 years ago and they said we didn't even have to pay the deductable. Might want to give them a try?
