Getting the boat ready to go this season, replaced oil and filter etc. Start it up and no oil pressure. :( Did a search in tech forum and replaced the quicksilver filter with a fram filter and all is well. :)

New question: I have a 96 454 mag w/ gen V thunderbolt ignition (I hope that sounds right). There is a purple wire with yellow tracer that's not connected and I can't figure out where it goes. I have a 96 mercruiser manual but it doesn't show any wires with that color code. It's bundled with a black wire which I assume is a ground. The purple wire has a female connector and the black has a male, if that helps.

The purple wire sounds to me like 12V +. Maybe it is the hot wire to the gauge? If you really had zero oil pressure, your alarm would be sounding. Likely a gauge issue.

Thanks for the color code chart, I'll keep that in my boat knowledge file. I did have both zero gauge and low pressure alarm, but changing the oil filter solved the problem. Thanks again Speedwakers!

If it is a flat spade terminal protected w/ heat shirnk and the ground is a small ring terminal it was for eletric choke for carb version of your engine. If its actually purple and white w/ a round plug on the end its for putting the engine in timing mode to set timing.
