One person is confirmed dead in a multi-vehicle accident in Sussex County, said Senior Cpl. Gary Fournier, a spokesman with the Delaware State Police.

The accident happened at about 7:15 a.m. south of Harbeson on Indian Mission Road in the area of Beaver Dam Road, Fournier said.

The crash involved a small, compact car and an eight-wheeled truck, Fournier said.

It is unknown at this time whether any other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Indian Mission Road is closed due to the accident, and motorists are encouraged to find an alternate route, Fournier said.

29-year-old Lewes woman was killed Thursday morning when she lost control of her car and veered into the path of a tractor-trailer in the oncoming lane.

State police Cpl. Gary Fournier said Megan L. Hammel was driving a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire north on Indian Mission Road near Harbeson about 7:08 a.m. when she lost control of the car, spinning it into the southbound lane where it was struck from behind by a 2005 International six-wheeler driven by Darwin Menendez, 35, of Milford.

The rig was hauling a load of concrete forms south on the highway, south of Hollymount Road, Fournier said.

Hammel was thrown from the car, which was ripped in half. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Fournier said she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

Menendez was taken to Beebe Hospital for treatment. It is not known whether he was wearing a seat belt. The roadway was closed for three hours while investigators examined the scene. No charges are expected to be filed against Menendez, Fournier said.
