Reggie Fountain Resigns, Eyes New Direction
Amid plenty of speculation over the past few weeks, Reggie Fountain, the legend behind Fountain Powerboats, announced his resignation today from the Washington, N.C., company that he founded more than 30 years ago and developed into one of the world’s leading high-performance boat builders.

Powerboat’s calls to Fountain went unreturned on Friday afternoon (Dec. 10), but here are his comments from a press release that was sent out.

“When I first started building performance sport and fishing boats in the late 1970s, I was personally involved in every facet of the operation,” Fountain said. “At this stage of my career I’ve come full circle and want to return to the custom, one-on-one roots I started with.

“There are key differences in opinion and philosophy between the current owners and myself on how to run the company,” he added. “I’ve always been one that plotted his own course and feel the best ways to utilize my talents is in new product development, racing and working directly with my customers. The performance boat business is changing fast and there are certain basic elements that must be in place to succeed.”

Earlier this year, Fountain Powerboats emerged from bankruptcy thanks to the financial backing of Liberty Associates. The company, which is led by CEO Bill Gates, also owns the Baja Marine brand and American Marine Holdings, which is the group behind the Donzi and Pro-Line brands. Liberty Associates had recently announced that the manufacturing operations of Donzi and Pro-Line were being relocated from production facilities in Sarasota and Crystal River, Fla., to the 250,000-aquare-foot, 66-acre Washington plant.

“We’ve sold more than a billion dollars worth of boats since we started,” Fountain concluded in the press release. ”And although I’m not able to announce any firm plans moving forward, boat building has always been my passion and the future looks both exciting and challenging.”

Have to see how the "Fountain" name and everything else comes out of this. I can't believe that Fountain boats would be the same without Reggie but who knows if that is good or bad at this point.

Interesting to see what Reggie does now.

I don't want to see any boat companies fail in these hard times.

Saw some releases from the company last week saying he was put on administrative leave.
You do gotta wonder BOTH...
what he'll do next-especially after his getting back to one off-custom comments etc
And also what beak boats will look like/be like w/o him:confused:
Chatter about non-compete clauses in threads I read earlier, I doubt he'll stay quiet for long!

Yes, I could read in between the lines of a power struggle with Reggie and the other owners. Sounds like it got very bad but I have to wonder if it was Reggie that is right or the analysts position. We shall see in both regards.

I take it that Reggie is like Henry Ford of past; know his stuff about the product but piss poor as business.

The beak boat is not my favorite but I hope Reggie is still in a capacity to contribute to the industry. He has done a lot for boats.:)

Fountain was dying a slow death for a very long time. Reggie knows boats and how to make them fast but he was always a terrible business man. The real crushing blow that accelerated the death spiral was the Luxury Tax imposed on the boating industry in January 1991. The end result of that tax was lower tax revenue, massive layoffs in the boat building industry and many old name manufacturers going belly up. The shot to Fountain back then just about took them out and they never recovered completely from the tax the rich plan of the democratic congress at the time.

 Fountain name vs Reggie Fountain.................that is funny. Sounds like this is going to get competitive. :laugher:

For all his faults, as if some have none , I don't think he deserves that. :(

Have you contributed MORE to boats that you can grade him????????

I am not a Fountain fan but the product is very significant and it came from Reggie. Also, it wasn't a Brunswick stamp like many others. :winker:

Like the beak boats or not, you gotta admit he has done alot to bring the hobby, the sport, the boats, and racing further into the mainstream. I really doubt the little bit of televised offshore racing that there iswould have ever been broadcast without his/fountain's involment, sponsorship, advertising, and dollars. Love him, hate him, or don't care he has added alot to boating.

I am not a Fountain fan but I wish Reggie the best! He has done a lot for the sport and made things interesting. I can't wait to see what comes next. I think the competition, assuming he builds boats, will be good for all of us.

Yea that is why some say he has small man syndrome. I have listened to him coaching his boats in videos of runs and he is too much at times but I don't wish him out of business.

Reggie reminds me of boxers talking trash before bouts when he gets reved up. :(
