what rev limiter

 

kinda figured that part out, but its got a soft touch rev limiter....im assuming thats an aftermarket piece?

 

Yup, MSD makes that. The white chip in it should have a decal with the rev limit posted on it.

Yep, it's a two prong chip that just pushes in and pulls out.

Their part# MSD-8745 includes 5 chips that range in 200rpm increments from 5000-5800rpm.

Their part# MSD-8746 includes 5 chips that range in 200rpm increments from 6000-6800rpm.

We have similar boats. I have a 1997 26ft Check with a HP500 in it. They boat runs really well if you have the motor in it. I bought it used and have an MSD setup in it. I will post a pick if that will help you or let me know what is in it. I know on the air cleaner, it says RPM range is between 7-7200 RPM.

 

well, its not a msd soft touch as stated. its wired right to the tb4 unit and just looks like a small rect box with some merc numbers on it

the other number and box is a "overspeed" module
i guess a rev limiter then, anyone know what the limit would be on this?? mercruiser parts doesnt say

 

If I'm not mistaken, the factory rev limiter should be around 5350 on an HP500. I know the 502 mags carbed was 5050 in 1993.

Its called a Deci System and the limit is at 5250 so you can use the full 5200 rpms stated as the upper limit of an hp 500.

It is removeable, but not changeable.

 

the merc piece is set at 5350. mine was dynoed , and that was where it cut out

 

Would a 1999 model HP500 have the same 5350 limit?
I am about to use TU to prop my boat.
I am now hitting about 5100 at a max.

I was hoping to get another 200 rpm...

Its designed to limit at 5250. You may see 5350 and you may see 5250 or maybe even 5400 on your tach. It can fluctuate a little, but 5250 is where the unchangeable factory settings are.
