rpm/hp increase with 5mph loss

just joined, have a 1988 Scarab Concept, 454. Last season boat ran 58 on gps with stock motor, 23 mirage prop. After season I pulled the motor and a very reputible local engine builder upped the compresion, added a different cam, roller rockers, performer intake. My total timing is right, jetting seems good. The boat come out of the hole much harder, the rpm went from 4600 to 4800 WOT. Running the same 23 the boat now runs 52 on the same gps. I'm baffled, the engine builder is confused, the prop guy says that this ammount of slip is nearly imposible and suggests an engine problem, but the boat runs so good, what gives! The engine builder says that the cam is right, no doubt. Any help would be apreciated I'm running out of good ideas!

23scarab - btw, I included it's thust washer also. I taped it into back of prop so it doesn't get lost in the box and packing.

Make sure to install the 'washer' (it's brass) so that it's larger id of taper is on outdrive side and smaller id is against prop side.

thanks for the help everyone! cfm, good phone conversation, talked to Throttle Up, some sugestions from them, I'll try the prop from you thanks so much. If I don't get it figured out/or even if I do I'm thinking about making a trip to Winni later this season.

23scarab - after I finally got my computer rebooted I tried e-mailing you the pics a few times but they got returned. I dunno' if I copied your e-mail wrong. Sorry.

Anyhow, I'll post the pics here - if they are too blurry let me know.

1st pic is the side that goes onto prop shaft spline after you install the prop. Pin is left piece in photo.

Heh, just thought of something. Since I only have one of these and you just need one for the prop I sent you, if you wish, you could send that back with the prop and you don't have to pay me the $11 for shipping the prop there.

If you want to/need to keep splined washer thing that's fine too of course.

Just let me know whenever.

Thanks.

I actually seem to have this washer for some reason!? my e-mail seems to be screwed up, not your fault about the pics. Waiting for new secondary metering rods from summit, should be here by this weekend.

I think I saw you going through the hells gates on sunday, I was in the red stingray

I saw a red stingray Sunday but it was on Damariscotta lake, where I keep my boat. I do know that area up around bath though, haven't been up there by water in a couple of years.

I think I might be in the same boat. I went from a 454 over.030 with a 420 cam in a boat that ran 69 on gps to a stroker 496- 2.25 in/1.88 ferra valves 11/32 stems special grind comp flat tappet cam with .552in .555 exhaust and the 4-7 swap DUI ign, Revolution marine exhaust; I am still running the 750 eldelbrock and rpm intake; I have a 850 sea demon but haven't run it yet; the boat runs very very strong low and midrange power but it falls flat on its face at 4900; I am running the same prop a labbed 24 bravo; the boat on top end is slower but low to midrange it is a lot faster what does every one think

Your carb is probably killing you. That Eddy has generic fuel calibration for an approx 300-330hp 454.

The Sea Demon has proved to be almost spot on for most 500+hp 502's.

Make sure you have min of 34 degrees total timing when carb tuning is all worked out.

Alway check fuel psi at WOT and top rpm.

Don't push motor hard or even at all until tuning issues are worked out. Only takes a wink of an eye to burn something.

I haven't pushed it to hard and I have the timing set pretty conservitive right now; The carb is a eldelbrock 750 marine; I put it on just because it was easy to tune and I had to do the cam break in procedure
