I have an offer pending on a boat, out of state
I ordered a physical survey, but was looking for advice on
the boats engine and drive, there is an onsite repair facility, should I have a compression test done,
and drive checked, and if they check the drive
without putting the boat in the water under load, what would they look for, ( alignment, clean fluid) I have purchased a boat out of state
before but I drove and picked up the boat myself and test drove it, and physically checked it

Im having this one shipped to me if all inspections go well,

engine hours on boat are 250

Im no professional machanic but here is my .02 worth.

I would defiantly have a compression check done. I would even look into a leakdown test if they wil do it.

If its a computer controlled engine have the history pulled to see exactly how hard the engine has been ran and if there were any past problems.

Have all fluids checked.

check for metal in the outdrive.

They could run a pressure check on the drive. If that comes out good then you can be fairly certain no water has leaked in and caused damage.

Check gimbal play.

remove outdrive and check alignment as well as U-Joints, gimbal bearing and bellows.

im sure I have forgotten about something

what about a marine survey if there's a reputable firm in the area? Can also do a title / vin number history search...
i did order a marine survey, but they are doing a physical test and moisture test also checking all
electronics and cosmetic
Have it checked out. Better safe than sorry. You did pretty good on that boat though! :D
I was considering something similar last winter and there was survey places that performed mechanical surveys separate from structural.

Or here is another option depending on where the boat is maybe someone on the site here could go and sea trial it on your behalf, as long as they are knowledgeable.

That's what I thought / had in mind... and I agree... especially if your spending significant $... the investment in thorough evaluation / checking it out is well spent...
My .02c for what its worth, would be to buy a plane ticket and go see it for yourself so you aren't so worried. If you are getting such a good deal you should be able to consider the expense of travel as part of the deal.
