I am about to swap in a fresh set of plugs and couldn`t help but wonder if those puney 7mm Japanese-looking factory plug wires were really doing the job. I am considering replacing them with some aftermarket 8mm performance wires. Am I wasting my time and money? This is on a `98 7.4 MPI. Also the distributor cap appears to be the original ( i bought this boat with 90 hours on it and haven`t tuned it up ). It now has 160 hrs. I was wanting to install an Accel brass terminal distributor cap and rotor...
Your thoughts:...........

Not sure on the wires, but I would use AC Delco Rapid Fire plugs #1. I put them in my 502 last year and really liked them. Sorry no help on the wires.

My concern about the wires is: All GM electronic ignition systems, since 1974, use 8mm plug wires. Why does my 1998 454 have 7mm wires?

It's worth changing the wires, for the little bit of $, it's better than the loss of performance, or possible huting something from a miss, or crossfire.
