Strange Vibration....

So I have this vibration that gets worse as i throttle up and when put it in gear it seems like it slams... I just had the boat serviced about a month or so ago, with new gimbal bearing, boots, re-sealed drive, new steering cable, new ss prop and new engine coupler. Motor was timed from 8 to 10 degress for more performance by mechanic. Can the motor put out that much vibration from not running correctly? Or is this just normal vibration that I am just now feeling from the motor?? I dont hear any noises that stand out from running is slow to high speed, but if i turn really sharp at like 8mph I can hear something going on in the transom area, like a deep hum noise. Kinda strange...

Dad says the gimbal bearing needs to be grease along with everything else which Ill do this weekend, but not really sure where else to look. Kinda thinking maybe i should just take it out of the water for the season... but i really enjoy fall cruising.

Any ideas what to do next?

Sounds like who ever did the service needs to look at things again.
Drive should not SLAM into gear.
If there is noticable vibration, something is wrong.
Maybe the gimble. If it is new, it should not need grease so bad that it causes noticable noise or vibration unless you have put a ton of hours on your boat since, like 100+. Alignment may be an issue too. If that is the case, the gimble and or coupler will be on the road to early failure.
Do you trust the mechanics that serviced it?
I watch all my neighbors get bent over and pay over and over again for work that just is not done right. Marinas and mechanice just sell them EXPENSIVE excuse and fairytales.
Good Luck

That sounds like ujoints with the vibration. I don't think gimbal bearing can be greased any more (sealed for life), so thats not going to help. As far as slamming into gear, make sure your idle is as low as possible, 750rpm idling out of gear would be nice.

So i talked to the mechanic tonight, and he told me to check if theres a spark plug boot that came off. Also he mentioned that it couldnt be the anything outdrive, ball joints, gimbal, etc... everything of my was in great shape when he re sealed it and had it apart. So i guess ill look for the boot thing tomorrow. He said if thats not the case to just take it out of the water for the season and bring it to him to look over and find out whats going on.

What a shi**y season... :(

For me anyways...

FYI, if my mechanic told me to check for a spark-plug boot with what you are describing, I would have reached through the phone and choked the $hit out of him, this makes me mad just reading it.

Sounds like your gimbal and/or u-joints man. Open the engine hatch and move from neutral to forward, if you hear any trashy/grinding/shitty/f'd up sound coming from behind your engine a) stop b) pull the drive and have the alignment checked and inspect the bearing, check this with an alignment tool, not your mechanic licking his thumb and holding it up and sayin' it looks good.

Listen, I know this is getting expensive, but if that gimbal comes apart you'll find out what expensive REALLY is...could this be the issue we discussed in the past, if so, it's not going away...

Get your other situation taken care of with the engine, fire your mechanic and find someone new, this guy has f'd you enough this year that you should be raw.

May be time to put this thing away for the winter so you can take a deep breath and relax, do some research over the winter and come back in the spring refreshed and ready to start again. If the motor is coming out over the winter, take care of all the outdrive stuff then while it's already off the boat and the engines out, consider that free labor to fix anything in the transom mount/plate/seals/gimbal and check for rot etc...

I'm surprised you haven't lost it yet, you have had it even worse than me this year. I'm sure I'll catch up with you soon.

Good Luck!

Im taking it out of the water for the season... I'm done with this stressful crap for now. I checked what he said and that wasnt the problem. SO... hes picking it up in a few weeks and I basically told him i want this all fixed and Im not paying for anything... ive already thrown in 5k into this, it should be performing ALOT better for what has been done. He agreed. So I appreciate all the help you guys have given me this season and will keep you informed what happens.

The slamming into gear thing is a separate issue. Theres the vibration problem and the slamming into gear problem. The whole boot thing was to be the vibration thing. So i thought i would clairify that.
