VIENNA, Maine - The owner of a machine shop where thieves stole $3,000 worth of scrap steel, iron and aluminum wasn't going to let it happen again. After Saturday night's theft, Joseph Lord loaded his shotgun and laid low, expecting the thieves to return. They came back on Tuesday, in broad daylight.

When Lord saw their 2008 F-250 pickup truck, he shot out its tires and windshield and blasted its radiator, Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty said.

The startled thieves took off on foot, but investigators quickly tracked down the truck's operator, who will be charged with theft, Liberty said. Charges are pending against an accomplice, the sheriff said.

Liberty said he discourages the use of guns to protect property. In this case, Lord told investigators he wanted to disable the vehicle so the criminals couldn't escape.

"I can understand the frustration that Mr. Lord must have been experiencing," Liberty said. But, he added, "We don't want to see anyone get hurt over property."

Don't steal other peoples property and no one will get hurt. If you steal you should get hurt. Hurt bad.
Completely agree, we are so worried about criminals rights, ya know what, don't steal my shiat or engage in behavior that puts you in that kind of situation and you don't have a damn thing to worry about, but come in my shop and you will have a brief conversation with Mr. Springfield. :D
Hats off to him.
Glad to hear HE wasn't charged with anything. TOO many stories like that where someone does the RIGHT thing. Defends themselves, families, and property, then some tight_s$ politician or judge tries to make an example of them and drags the VICTIM (or near victim) through the mud.
About 8 years ago, I worked the night shift. One of my co-workers got off early (2 am) and went home. He walked into his bedroom and heard a noise from the living room. He grabbed his .357 from the night stand and went to investigate. He saw a pair of feet under a curtain. He told the guy that he had a gun and to come out. The intruder jumped out from behind the curtain and ran at the home-owner. Of course, the intruder was shot - and died. Turns out he had a long rap sheet for burglary and other thefts. A career criminal.
My co-worker`s case was brought before a grand jury, who refused to indict him.
The newspaper quoted the sheriff as saying "A home-owner has the right to protect his life and property. Thank God this home-owner was armed".

Bingo !!! Cops are way off on that one.

Dont want to see anyone get hurt over property !!!
Just what theves want to hear !!!

And there we be alot less of them if they had the fear of getting shot !!!
Here in MD they would prob. have charged him with manslaughter for "Laying in wait", just a note to all the criminals out there, come to Baltimore, you have all the rights in the world here and chances are you won't even get caught in the first place, love this city.
Here in Texas, claim you feared for your life, and make sure he's on your property.
As told to me by an old-timer I used to work with: Years ago a repo man took a guys truck. The guy got his deer rifle and popped the repo man when he was all the way at the other end of the block. The judge said not guilty because the guy thought he was defending his property from theft. The prosecutor asked "what are the repo men supposed to do about situations like this?" The judge said "If it were me, I'd find another line of work." You don't find judges like that too much anymore.
