Projects are only fun for the first 5 hours or 15k. whichever comes first. And at that point you start cursing, throwing tools, and getting yelled at by the significant other for not "spending" enough quality time and just "spending" money. :D
Yeah, I know, Have been there before with chevelles.

That is kinda why I like this one, its already stripped. Should take a few weekends, and very little $$$ to get the glass all fixed up, and painted in all white urethane Bas/Clear, then have my graphics guy do something wild up in Vinyl, was thinking a big sword, done in metallic silver, with the name "excalibur overlayed in an opposing color. Then do something with all of the cleats/grab handles, etc. powdercoated in the opposing color.

I dont spend much time with the sig. other now, we like it better that way :D :D , this will just give ma a "real" reason to not be around.

OK, here is what I am thinking, and this may not even come to be, depending on what bid goes up to, if my boat actually sells, and how my second interview at a certain company goes on Friday.

But anyway, I have been wanting an Outbord boat for a while, its just easier to deal with in the shallow areas around sandbars, and with low tide at the ramps(especially in the keys). SOOOOO, I can get this boat, repair the crack, glass up the outdrive hole in the transom, sand and paint the entire boat, and then mount an outboard bracket, and pick up a used/low hour outboard(they are all over the place down here) for it.

My question is..........

How much outboard power will it take to get this guy to 70???(I really dont wanna go any faster than that, but would like to run an occasional race, in P-5 which is 60-69.9MPH).

200???(I dont think so)

250???(maybe close)

300???(for sure, but big$$$$)

would I be better off with a single 300, or twin 150's???(keep in mind the extra $$$ to rig twins)

After the paint and outboard, its only interior, this is a small boat, and interior(other than front seats) is easy enough to have a little old lady stitch it up(all Flat Panels), and final rigging, steering, controls, cables, wiring(simple harness, theres not much more than a few lights, and a set of guages, and a few switches for drive and trim tabs.

rchevelle - the boat is at a marina about 40 minutes from my office - ridley park - right off of I95 - 10 minutes below philly international airport - I wrote to the seller in case I can help you out.
Thanks Jeff, whoever is closer, you or Marky. There is not much to inspect. All I would need is a looksee at the crack, and look to see if their are others, and then a poke test on the stringers, and inside of the transom. Dont care about wiring/interior/guages, if there even is any. :D

I dont know what the equivalent is in outboards but ours had a 454(I think) and TRS drive and it ran in the low 60's. Sorry my memory is a little shady, we bought it when i was 7 or so and sold it probably 10 years ago. It was a fun boat though. That was the first 'offshore' boat I had ever driven.

It is not really comparable to a Sterndrive, the 454 was like 330 horse, but only turns 4200-4600 RPM, an Outboard will go to 7000 or so RPM, if built right. Sterndrives(especially TRS, with trans.) are much heavier, and tend to eat up power as it is transferred thru the trans, outdrive etc. On a sterndrive boat you would have to use a extension box to get the drive setback from the boat to get clean water to the prop, on an outboard, it can be mounted on a simple Bracket to get it back afoot or 2, or on a Jackplate to have an adjustable x-dimension, can even go with a hydraulic one if ya want to make the height of the motor adjustable on the fly, kinda like trimming it up, but straight up instead of angled.

A good 200 outboard that is set up properly should get that boat to high 50's/low 60's. I am thinking a 250 would get it to mid 60's which I would be OK with, but it wouldnt be competitive, a 300 would get it to 70+, but a 300 is like $15,000+. If twin 150's would get it close to 70, I can get used ones on the cheap, and spend a little more $$$ on the rigging, but have twins.

The marina is 40min south of me......right in the middle of me and Jeff.

keep us informed. My buddy has a moisture meter that i can borrow.

P.S. i think you've been hanging around Jay to long. You posts are getting longer and longer with more and more detail :lick:
I dont care who you are...............Now that right there is funny!!!!! :laugher: :laugher: :laugher:

What do you think of the outboard idea???

I know, you are a Big Block guy too, I love the roar, but hate the maintenance, Outboards just make more sense here.

Glass the transom and buy at OB bracket and be done with it. One big OB would be the way to go. You may be able to buy two smaller ones cheaper but I wonder how much more you'll have in rigging the twins over a single. Plus they need to counter rotate. Do OB have differnt lower for this or can they be ran WOT either directing like a Bravo?

Not sure on how the rotation thing works on outboards. Yes, a big O/B is $$$$, But I can finish the hull and save for an outboard at the same time. I am not afraid of being boatless for a year or so, I have done it before, and I have enough buds(not according to Mark :laugher: :laugher: ) to keep me boating during the recess. Between here, and the other 3 boards I am a member of(including the outboard one), I think I can find enough parts to get 'er done, thats what Trick marine is for :D :D

YUP!!!!!!!!

Here is the text from over there!!!!!!

To any concerned: I know all about that boat. The Delaware reg numbers in the picture belong to me. The hull was cracked at the port stringer for at least 6 feet. It almost sank on me in the Delaware River 3 years ago. I made it back to the dock with water up to the spark plugs.
