What oil are you guys running in your 496 HO? I am currently running Mercruiser 25W-40. I think this oil sucks! When I run the boat hard for a long period of time I notice my oil pressure drops alot when I come back off plain and just ideal. When I winterize the boat I want to switch oil and was wondering what you guys recommend. thanks in advance.
I disagree that the Mercury 25w-40 sucks but I switched to Valvoline Max Life synthetic blend 20w-50 and Wix oil filter in my 525 mainly because it's easier to find locally. I think that this combo would work good in the 496 also.

What RPM are you running it? What is your pressure?
I use the Merc oil in 496HO and never had any issues.
After a hard run and come to idle my guage may read around 10psi. My scan software says it's actually running more psi. 10 psi is within the Merc spec if you read the manual.
I've been using Royal Purple 20w50 since last year. I'm happy with it. Engines run 20* less oil temp over dino oil. I changed oil 1 engine at a time and tried a run.
I did hear from an oil expert that Mobil 1 twin V is better. May give that a try.
I use Valvoline VR1 50wt now. Used to run Rotella but the last time I did I had oil temp problems, just isn't the same as it used to be. I've never used the merc oil. After a hard run mine only reads about 10psi but as it cools it comes right back up.
edit: meant to say 10psi at idle. It still pulls 50psi at higher rpm when hot.
I've been using Valvoline Racing 20-50 "non street legal" in my 557. Readily available at NAPA. Part number is Vv851, if you're interested. My oil pressure never drops below 38-40, even after a hard run.
Engine is now broken in, and I'm out of the Valvoline Racing oil. So, I'll be filling the crank case with Mobile1 V-Twin 20-50 next time around.

Autozone around here carries the VR1 Valvoline. I like the straight wt oils. They don't break down near as fast with lots of heat.
I've used the Castrol 4T and the Mobil v-twin and both are good oils. Still retain good anti-wear additives.

I ran Mobile1 V-Twin when my current 557 was a ZZ502/502. I ran the ZZ pretty hard at times, for four seasons. Upon tear down for stroking and related tweeking, all the internals were in great shape. No place seems to stock the M1VT around here. PIA to get the stuff, but worth it to me.
I like Mobil 1 15W50 in my HO's. When running the Merc 25W40, I didn't have pressure loss, but would use about 1/2 qt. in 3 hours of operation. After switching to the 15W50, I have not used a drop in 30 hours!

My psi drops to 10 psi at an idol I no that is with in spec but I dont like it. I can run all day long not hard and still hold 20 psi at idol only when I run hard it will drop to 10 psi. My nephew had the same problem with a 454 he has and he switched to Mobile and problem solved never droped psi or very little any way. I was thinking of trying the Mobile 1 also but just wanted to see what others are using. Thanks again for all the feed back
