Okay, I'm just about to put my newly rebuilt (again) engine in, any thoughts on the break in oil.... dino vs. synthetic?

I want to go with a light weight synthetic oil, the machine shop says to go with dino oil until broken in or the rings won't seat properly...???

I now it's a boat engine, and not a car engine but I know my 01 vette when I bought it new came with synthetic right from the get go.

Any thoughts?

Well, glad you asked. My engine builder who had hands on with the engine says use dino oil.... the machine shop I used to run the engine on dyno and break it in (last time) said I should have used sythetic right from the get go.

That's why the question??????? Two machine shops, two different answers. Kinda like this board, lots of different answers :D

DINO!

but a silly question, why would you NOT do what your machine shop said on a engine they just did for you.

Re: Re: what oil to use for break in of new engine

30T right away, my machine shop said to use like a 5/30 'cause it's thinner and will get where it's supposed to be faster. That is of course after properly priming the engine etc before hand.

Anyhow, my engine is a roller...

if you have a flat tappet cam use rotella sae 30 T, and one pint of lucas break in additive. thats what we do for all remans we install(flat or roller)

My thoughts on the synthetic is in case the oil gets too hot, like with a blown impellor or something. The synthetic would hold up longer. I installed an oil temp sensor and guage end of last year, so I'll be watching it closely.

I'll see if I can find the valvoline oil or check out the diesel stuff. Thanks.
