I thought the Jan. issue of HOT BOAT was much improved over the older version in terms of appearance and design. Was interested to read about the internal politics--guess we'll see how that shakes out. The articles were pretty good, but comparing it to the most recent issue of Powerboat, I couldn't help but notice the huge overlap of content. Both had articles about the IMCO/Duramax diesel set-up...a lot of the same boats test featured...of course much of this stuff is inevitable, but I doubt that both publications can continue to cover the same territory for a long time. :eek3:

Also--the Jan. issue read like Havasu Hot Boat, with at least 3 separate articles on manufacturer shoot-outs and meet-ups from there. I know it's their backyard, but it was a little over the top. What was touted on the cover as a swimsuit section turned out to be one photo of three [admittedly hot] bikini babes. I know it will take a while to get things sorted out, so I look forward to seeing what they come up with as time goes on.

Personally, rather than reviews of new big $$ boats, I'd love to see more how-to and hands-on articles, restorations, owner-customized boats, etc. Hot Boat has always seemed to be pretty good at covering that stuff in the past, and Powerboat doesn't seem to get into that much. That said, expensive new boats are great eye candy, and they offer great ideas for customizing/updating older boats. :beers:

I haven't seen any of the other magazines out there, like Extreme Boats. What's that like? And what about Performance Boats...the offspring/true heir/by-product of HB? I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this.

Seems I've got subscriptions to all available mags.

I've gotten HB for as far back as i could remember. Actually their forum was the very first I used back when, and discovered OSO for instance on there, then this one after that.

I think they (magazne) were in need of not being so much west-coast oriented in terms of their boat and location coverage. Not a lot of offshore stuff really, but a great motorhead mag. Chicks were always a treat though.... :lick:

i like the new hot boat, wish they did'nt want to clean it up though, liked the chicks in skimpy SH*^, but the photos and pages are alot cleaner looking, i am also one of theose guys that saves every magazine he has ever got and the thicker covers like hot boat will keep much longer. I can however see how someone earlyer posted that they liked the "gritteness" of the old hot boat. time will tell though

I have tried for the last 2 years to get any of the magazines to recogize that there are more places to boat than Havasu. Some folks are finally waking up to the Chesapeake Bay. I feel that progress is coming slowly.

I liked the few issues of Family and Performance that I have seen. Never seen or heard of "Speedboat" though, any info? THANKS

Still not liking the new HotBoat attitude though. Seems like "We are the best and the only reason you don't realize it is because the old owners stiffed us on this or that/anything you don't like, well we'll be suing someone soon, then you'll like us...". I had always got a kick out of the fact that Larry Flynt owned/published it before. Miss the old already :(

I just renewed my HB sub. I have been reading that magazine since I learned to read! I grew up on lake cumberland and was under the dash of a sanger jet boat when i was 6 mos old. I have always has a passion for the old school west coast jets, v-drives, and speed ski boats like schiada. HB was the only mag i could get coverage of them in! Hopefully they stay with that theme!

I've never seen Family & Performance Boating. I only have one issue of Speedboat that I picked up at a newsstand...it's published by the same group that does BOATING, and I think it's a one-off that they only publish from time-to-time.

There a link with no info on the BOATING site (found only through a google search) and it's not listed among their regular publications. With all the competition in this area now, I wouldn't see them getting into it, even though HF is a major magazine publisher. I mean, we've now got Powerboat, Hot Boat, Performance Boats and Extreme Boats...that's a lot of competition, and I probably left out something.

Well it's official!! I am disappointed enough to let my subscription run out and end. What is this their 4th issue? 4 pages on a 140 hp 4cyl. MAXUM...WTF??? HotBoat of the month- Miccosaukee gaming's Fountain raceboat? (Cool and all, fast and wins, but seems like pandering to Reggie for advertising dollars) They say they are trying to clean up. Then cover states Hot Boats and HOT CHICKS! (To draw you in) a 2 page shot of a couple girls to allow the cover's headline. They seem mixed up and confused as to which direction they want to go, or scrounging for material or something. THE MAXUM did ice my cake! Even with my v-6 deckboat (no where's near the caliber of you guys and your rigs) I don't want to read/see CRAP like that. :(

I hadn't got that far into my copy yet so looked ahead to that story. WTF is another 42 mph wake boat doing in this mag? Why not add a tech section for blow boats. Wake and ski boats are slow, boring one purpose boats. I don't want to read about them. Would rather see an occasional hi-po PWC.

The more I read the more I dis-like the new. Editorials just hammerin' the old owners, an editorial section explaining how a camera lense works...WTF WTF WTF?

Following though was a nice piece on BoatMe's business. Congrats to him on that.

But the rest of their name calling and blame placing makes them look worse in my eyes.

I'm so PO'd after the camera works like this baby talk and this is billet, that I fired this off to 'em:

I am finally motivated enough to write to you. After subscribing for nearly 15 years, I will be letting my account run out. If you guys spent more time and effort on building a better product and less on blaming and dragging the former owners through the mud, I might give you more of a shot. There were alot of "fans" of the old crew. You guys have worked real hard to alienate them with all of your "Thank goodness the old regime is gone". Well I liked them better than the new thus far!! To blame all your woes on others belittles you, that is true with everything in life. Learn it! "They stole all our archives..." well, get to work and get some more, YOUR OWN!! Don't expect sympathy when you include elementary articles on the workings of a camera (WTF? that was BS waste of paper!! Then, "this is billet" WTF again!) Tales from Thunderboat Row is good, but your new tech sections are blatant sales pitches. Supercharging with Whipple. No Tyler Crockett this month. Then to ice anyone's cake...That sure was a way cool 4 cylinder powered Maxum POS you devoted 4 pages too. THE SHAME!!!!!!!!!
Pull your head out, make a mag people will like and quit making excuses and trying to blame the old staff and owners!
If you feel the need to reply please send to rschap1@hotmail.com as this is sent from my work address!
I do wish you guys luck as with anybody in the industry, but not at the cost of others/elders.

Real nice in depth investigation into the footwear of offshore's biggest names...TERRIBLE. Oh but there are a couple nice blurbs about who wears what Rolex wrote by some poor SOB's Grandma...Hot Boat has turned into a real POS  :(

I'm waiting for things to get better. The last few months, the photography has been horrible...you see interior (cabin) shots and engine compartment shots that aren't even back-lit. It's like looking into a cave! The last issue was a little better, but I've seen better work from a cellphone camera.

They seem to get a lot of mileage out of their models too-I think I've seen the same half-dozen girls over the last four issues.

Yeah - they have made some curious choices and the first few issues were "all Havasu - all the time" but I will probably still buy it off the newstand from time-to-time...
