I thought the Jan. issue of HOT BOAT was much improved over the older version in terms of appearance and design. Was interested to read about the internal politics--guess we'll see how that shakes out. The articles were pretty good, but comparing it to the most recent issue of Powerboat, I couldn't help but notice the huge overlap of content. Both had articles about the IMCO/Duramax diesel set-up...a lot of the same boats test featured...of course much of this stuff is inevitable, but I doubt that both publications can continue to cover the same territory for a long time. :eek3:
Also--the Jan. issue read like Havasu Hot Boat, with at least 3 separate articles on manufacturer shoot-outs and meet-ups from there. I know it's their backyard, but it was a little over the top. What was touted on the cover as a swimsuit section turned out to be one photo of three [admittedly hot] bikini babes. I know it will take a while to get things sorted out, so I look forward to seeing what they come up with as time goes on.
Personally, rather than reviews of new big $$ boats, I'd love to see more how-to and hands-on articles, restorations, owner-customized boats, etc. Hot Boat has always seemed to be pretty good at covering that stuff in the past, and Powerboat doesn't seem to get into that much. That said, expensive new boats are great eye candy, and they offer great ideas for customizing/updating older boats. :beers:
I haven't seen any of the other magazines out there, like Extreme Boats. What's that like? And what about Performance Boats...the offspring/true heir/by-product of HB? I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this.
