300-375 hp range will do fine, 20' boat for river use I currently have the 4.3 . I bought the boat new in 1992. The boat is in very good condition and just want more power and speed with a load.
"Description.....
Imagine an aluminum head small block that makes 355 horsepower.
What if it had a steel roller camshaft, four bolt main block, undercut rolled fillet crankshaft, high silicon pistons and strong PM connecting rods? Your Price - $3,698. "
There are better deal on them out there than that, first site I came across.
One of the issues is the Yamaha stern drive. Have had no problems, it's rated for 454 power. The 350 will be a big change and I will go to the Bravo next. It's just works better for me if shop just drops in the engine. Not sure on mpi or carb.
I would give Jasper a call. They have got some good packages with a 1 year warranty, parts and labor. The problem you will have is that Alpha unit holding anymore HP then 350HP. You will have to baby it.
Like I said, the drive is rated for a V8 and yes there is very few of them, I was told Mercury bought as many engines as they could in 1990 and 1991 where yamaha was trying to get in the market and forced Baja to used their units. Not sure what the real story is. I am going to upgrade to the Bravo drive, just hope i can hold off till mid summer
I've looked around a little. Trying to decide how much to spend on a 92 model or go ahead and upgrade to new. Would like to keep what i have no matter what. Thought about putting my nailhead in it and just purchase a new drive.
I've seen the Yamaha drives, just never on a Baja.
What ever posessed Brunswick to pull that off is beyond me.
I actually knew someone that had one, and while it was a good drive, parts were nonexistant and virtually no one would work on it.
One of the boards I am on has a constant stream of people looking for parts and service.
Yamaha left a lot of people hanging with that venture.
Well if you are thinking about the bravo then I would look at GM crate power. Scoggin and Dickey is a good customer and they have great deals on crate engines. This is good bang fo rthe buck.
Figure your coming from a 4.3 and you've been getting around 4 MPG since 92 on regular gas. With the 350 your MPG will slip below 3 for sure. I have a ZZ4 cam sitting under my shop shelf right now. It's a little to much cam for marine. And has been know to pull water through the exhaust in no wake zones.
Go carb vs. FI, if your like most you don't have the resources local to optize the FI. I seriously doubt buying mail order FI chips is going to be your solution.
I'm no expert, but I recommend you talk to one. The easiest way I can think of is purchasing something form them. Two recommendations:
1. Dennis Moore: he knows what he's doing and will steer you right use these to strike up a conversation. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2463508389&category=31285
or
Buy a package deal from Victory
$4250 buys everything from govictorymarine.com
After $5000 the last thing you need is to be kicking yourself.
