ok, so heres the deal.....my buddy has a 1976 Cigarette 28ss.....one engine has water in it....don't know the problem as of yet...but the engines are probably close to 15yrs old right now since the last build.....at which point they were dyno'd at 398hp and 403hp....so 400hp each. The boat has the mercII trannies and TRS drives. Last time i changed the fluids on one of the drives it had some water in it too.....so this year its all getting gutted and redone. Up until the engine got water in it it was a turnkey built proof reliable boat....just add gas, check oils, and go! Best we ever got out of it was 68mph. Now he's wanting to get into the mid 70's if possible and still have a turnkey reliable boat......so what are everyones thoughts on building up a pair of SBC's? Anything goes as long it it will WORK EVERY TIME.....he is not the kind of guy that can tune blowers/carbs between runs etc.... So if you can get a blower motor to run with VERY little maint other then maybe checking fluids on it etc.....or maybe freshening it up over the winter etc....then lets hear it. I was thinking along the lines of a 383.....

Please keep in mind the mercII trannies will have to stay....If we can fit the velvet drives (DOES ANY ONE KNOW IF POSSIBLE??) then they will be changed out...but looking at the setup right now there is next to no room to move the engines forward...yes the trannies will be sent out to get beefed up....same with the drives...the TRS's are getting sent out and looked through.

The boat already has a blower race hatch on it if need be! :D

BBC's are out of the question.....he loves the way the boat is setup and fly's right now and feels BBC's will make it a$$ heavy.

So lets have it!!! Oh and he says a budget of about $20k has been set aside for this....ALL of it including trannies drives etc.......so lets not get toooo crazy with exotic parts! :D Thanks and everything that gets done on this project will be documented and pics posted :)

mild, longevity, 500hp and sbc... hmmm gonna want more than 400 CID unless you pressurize it... 427, 434, etc... pretty common combinations these days.. 500 hp is pretty easy with those displacements, given good parts on top.

for a pair, professionally built, dyno'd... not skimping when it comes to parts, etc.. you are gonna need more than 20K... if you plan to do the drives and such too...

Machining and assembly of the shortblock is all we will have done on the outside.....the rest will be assembled by myself and his brother who is also a big gear head.....and when done they will be taken over to an engine shop to be broken in and dyno'd.....so that should save some money..... also all parts will be bought by us...they have a few good contacts for parts seeing as they restore muscle cars....

Dry exhaust is going to probably be mandatory if doing NA.

So, that being said, to build the motor shouldn't be much of an issue, it's just the camshafts that will be required along with the exhaust system.

Oh, fuel octane too. Will need 92-94. Remember, rumour has it that in a year or two 91 octane will be max at all pumps.

Oh...i forgot to mention and i dont know if this would make a big difference or not......the engines allready have a gil 3.5" dry exhaust....water dumped right at the tips and a set of Gaffrig clamp on muffs on the end. Which is all staying....
Right when I hit send on my post. :laugher: :laugher: :laugher:

Beautiful - let's get started.

400cid with RMBuilder AFR heads and camshaft. Done deal. :D

Take dyno's with a grain of salt but will give you a heads up with what's needed. Real life experiences do show these power levels to be pretty easily attainable. It's all in the package ! And great head ! :D

CFM,
This would be a great build for AFR's new 195CC/23Âş Street/Competition Eliminator head. These would still enable you the 500+ HP goal, with 9.5:1 compression even if you are limited to std bore 4.030" (383" vs 410+") block (thus eliminating the additional expense of "blocking for a 4.1xx" bore size).

Preliminary data shows the following flow curve for both 195 products...

INT.....Street.....Comp

.200.....137........140
.300.....194........202
.400.....240........248
.500.....270........280
.550.....280........292
.600.....286........300

EXH.....Street.....Comp

.200.....110........115
.300.....158........165
.400.....190........200
.500.....207........217
.600.....215........225

All numbers tested on an SF600 with a 4.060 Bore. Exhaust #'s thru a 1.75" flowtube to simulate a header attached to the exhaust port. These numbers are guaranteed by AFR to be accurate to 3% as advertised.

Many worked heads don't make 300 CFM @ .600". These not only make that number, but do so with a true 195 CC intake port out of the box giving maximum velocity throughout the curve. Equally impressive is the 194/202(Intake) CFM @ .300" number. Properly set up they will provide both mid-range TQ and HP on top.

I would agree also the Lg Port Bowtie Vortec is a very impressive iron cylinder head and a good iron choice. It would require a different setup to make the goal.

Pair of 421CID SBC
3.875 Stroke
4.155 Bore
6.00 Rods
230cc Dart Iron Eagle/World Products Motown
Single Plane Intakes
Prepped 800 cfm carbs
9 to 1 compression.

Should put you in the 490 to 525Hp all day long. Should make close to 550#/ft of torque.
I needs me two of them as well

.....

I am very interested to see what happens with this build. I LOVE BIG INCH SMALL BLOCKS :D

Talking with the guy earlier today he's geeked on some blower motors now! .......i see me getting very friendly with these engines for a long time now! :D Anyway the initial engine looks like the 690hp model off the air flow site:

383ci with Eagle rotating assembly....all checked out and reballanced...we have a good shop for to this.
671 blower
AFR 195 heads
pair of holley 650's on each engine
he allready has a full MSD ign system
allready have a Gil 3.5" dry exhaust that will be staying
Cam off the AFR site looks good considering its on a 114CL...should work good in the boat.....but other suggestions we are open to :D

looks like the mercII trans will be getting extra clutch plates for the xtra HP
The TRS drives will be fully gone through while its all apart to be sure its solid.....but 10+years of hard abuse and they took everything that these two guys threw at them without a hickup!!!

i will be tearing the one engine that has water in it appart maybe even this weekend......he has another shortblock to swap over parts to just to make it through the rest of this season.......the new blocks/parts will be ordered by the end of next month he says.....this should be fun! :)

Wally,
If this guy is willing to spend this kind of money then I would build to Super SB. Get a pair of 9.325" deck SBC. Go with a 4" stroke crank and 4.185" with a 6 rod for 440CID SBC. Put 9 to1 compression in them and in NA form they will run for 250 to 300 hours no problem making 525HP all day long below 5800 rpm.
