another outdrive refinishing question

Yeah i don't really see any reason besides corrosion problems with PC...but i guess thats what anodes are for huh, as long as they are grounded good to the drive and ring right???

I'm in fresh water so i'm not too worried about it. she spends about 50 hrs in the water a year.

i'm all about the bling factor, BUT i agree with function over form. Make it work, then bling it out...LOL :clown: :laugher:

looks good so far... I need to get off my azz and get going here....

as for anodize... It is actually a honeycomb cyrstaline structure that forms over the surface at a molecular level. It is extremely durable and almost bulletproof to ANY kind of corrosive. Thats why i asked... almost a perfect candidate.....but you should have a semi-smooth surface for it to work properly.

well...I'm building my drive stand tomorrow. Getting ready to do the gutting and painting. Hoping to try that chrome paint! "Killer Cans"...2 part. Cool system. Will post pics eventually of the whole mess...lol

anyone know where to get a nose cone for an alpha 2...or something that will work?

Hmmmm....I wonder why the Mercury engineers never thought of that?

It's your $$, Good Luck!

didn't mean to offend!

I guess merc did figure it out...otherwise all drives would have a round nose. just saying...whats easier to move through water...a knife blade or the handle.

not sure, but it was probably alot with all that bottom paint....lol... the hull is about as smooth as a rocky beach.

My prop turns about 2450rpm at 43mph(gps)...4 blade 20 pitch.

Other guys with my boat report 50mph with a 3 blade 21 pitch at 2350rpm

whats the formula?

prop shaft rpm...ouch 15%

I'll get about 5mph back from a smooth hull alone according to the calc.

As light as my hull is, I should be looking for around 8-9% I'm guessing.

ok...back to outdrives

I should be finishing my stand tonight at work. I love free stainless! I'll post some pics when i'm done. i liked the one with the swivel that was posted, so I did my own version of that. Sweet idea! Should help alot when pulling the unit

couple questions...

First... Do I have to drill the housing to get the bolt out of the tiller arm? Or can I get it out from the inside once I get the engine out? (outdrive and bell housing are off)

second... Does the gimbal ring have bushings in it for the side bolts? I have some slop there... would like it tight again. Was still fairly tight side to side, but loose in the holes.

Third... The ring that holds the bellows in the bell housing....That goes in from the outdrive side after the bellows is in the groove right? Any tricks, it looks rediculious to re-install.

Forth... Is the square pin really hard to get out? My unit looks really good..everything is well greased for the most part. Will I definately need the puller tool for my slide hammer?

Anyone feel free to take a shot at some of this. I'm pretty much stuck until I get my 4 banger out anyways.
