Anybody know any history on a 1988 US1 Cougar named Plain Vanilla?

Still looking for a reasonablly priced 42'+ v-hull, and this one fits the bill nicely. It was surveyed last year with a clean bill of health.

Just wondering if anybody knows anything about it.

The current owners bought it in Ohio, but only owned it over the winter and never put it in the water after they bought it. They don't know much about the boat.

Here's a pic...

Thanks
Fred

EDIT - One problem it has, the starboard Speedmaster III's prop is loose on the shaft. Having only owned inboard boats with Nibral props, I don't know much about these drives with splined props. Do the shafts splines or prop splines, or both go, when they do go bad? How much money we looking at in parts to fix? These three engines are said to be 850 HP 572 BBCs with 8-71 BDS blowers.

I went and looked at the boat today. It looks great. Engine room is spotless and well lit. No signs of any leaks or other problems. The pipes are beautiful. Whomever built these pieces did a fine job; there's some big big bucks just in the pipes. Everything seems tight. Wiring all looked real good. Three of the Gafrig gages were fogged over. The seats were fine. The interior was ok - a couple of small access doors were missing, everything else is in very good condition. The hull did not seem to have any repairs, other than up front where it looks like someone fixed some scuffing from trailer loading. There is some paint cracking at the air intakes on the side of the cockpit, but I don't believe its an indication of anything bad going on there.

The current owners are faxing me the survey done when they bought it late last year (kinda jibes with your eBay recolection). Of course, I'd have it re-done and a sea-trial before I bought it. The boat is sitting in a pole barn in Canada (it was cold there today!). They had a video they took when they bought the boat. The engines started just fine with no indication in the video of any engine problems. They told me the survey shows even compression across the two outside motors, with the middle engine even across itself but a bit higher reading than the two outside ones.

Any idea what it went for on eBay?

I guess the outboard drives are 4's with the middle one being a 3. Are parts still available for those? I went to the mercruiser sight, and it rates 3's at 750hp.

Why would a boat be buiilt with different drives? Maybe there was a 4 in the middle and it broke?

Sorry for being dumb on this stuff - I've been drag boating V-Drive s and jet boats, and owning large aft cabin cruisers for many years, but now I want to kill myself in a big boat, not a 18 footer!

I don't remember what it went for....sorry. But, like you said, the boat is sharp (as indicated in the ad). Good luck in your boat search. That's the reason I remember this boat, because I was in the middle of a search at that time.

Very nice Waybomb. We'll be moving up to that size in the next few years. I'm already feeling our current Carver is too small inside. Hey, I was doing some searching and came across this ad:

This boat is in Ohio, and I doubt there's many Cougar 46's running in Ohio, so you may want to contact the owner of this one and ask if he knows the history of the other one. This one looks pretty well cared for, yet it's not customized like "Plain Vanilla". Low hour engines, too.

If nothing else, he can tell you what to look for in the other one.

I saw the boat on Ebay and it went for cheap! Looked to good to be true but it was awsome looking they did get it cheap. Guess they bought it to flip it a few months back. I remeber the boat looked good and it showed that it was kept in a covered lift.

Hope that helps.

I bought my Baja of Ebay and it was the best Purchase I have ever made except for my new home in Hawaii. :sun3:

The boat was originally owned by a guy in Connecticut,I think the name was Carbetta? It used to be Plain White (no graphics nothing, Hence the name)and was kept on a hydro Hoist At Pilots Point marine in Westbrook, CT. Used to see it out once in awhile never met the owner, but I am sure it was serviced at Ocean Performance.
