Big boat, small lake?

I have been giving it some thought. That is, taking my 40 Excalibur down to my parents summer home on Lake Shafer indiana. The average size boat is 21ft, lots of ski boats and pontoons. Would love to bring the boat down, but here are my concerns

Getting the boat in the water. There's one place, that has a concrete ramp for boats up to 38ft.

Shallow waters. Water depth around the marina is only about 5-6ft.

Biggest issue, is that I will look sillly, considering I have been on that lake for 26 years, and never saw anything over 30ft. My old four winns Liberator looked huge compared to most of the boats.

Would you guys bring it down there?

Get ready to hear about it. THe little lake I live near ( 3 miles long if that ) is swamped with 16-22' open bows and fishing boats. A buddy recently bought a new 23 Outlaw and he has gotten nothing but $hit about it...and this is only a 23. The typical comment is " why in hell do you need somethign that fast on this little lake? "

you'll be king until some guy in a 21 footer with big hp smokes you and he'll be blabbing it all over the lake....

the advantage of a large offshore hull is lost on a small lake with small waves.

My 38 Top Gun was never the fastest boat on the bay, but when the water got rough very few if any of the smaller faster boats could ever hang with me...

but the bottom line is - do you think you'll have fun -- because every guy with an engine on the back of his boat is going to be gunning for that big target of yours for bragging rights.

Used to boat on Freeman (sister lake to Shafer) every weekend. In my opinion, both of those lakes are to small for anything larger than 30', and that is pushing it.
Those lakes are just to narrow and where the PWC's outnumber the boats. A 40' boat just cruising to stay on plain, is at the top end of most of those boats speeds. I think you will be somewhat dissed by the other family boaters. Remember Shafer has Indiana Beach, more tourist. Last time I was on Shafer I was dragging bottom in the middle of the lake, and this was in a 17 open bow many yrs ago. I'm surprised the ramps will even handle large boats. I had trouble launching my 27' on Freeman. No way would I even consider taking my 32' on either of those lakes. Too narrrow, too packed, too shallow.

It would probably just be for a weekend, and yes this boat doesnt like flat water!

USFountain, you are correct about the lake being so crowded and small. I would probably make a cruise or two down the lake, then just go behind the amusment park where people anchor off and hang out, like we usualy do.

If I was plowing thru off plane, my boat does create a pretty big wake, enough to scare a poor guy with his family in their 17ft bowrider. Maybe its a bad idea :unhappy1:

2 years ago we launched my baja 272 in some TINY lakes that are 2 blocks from my cabin. There are 4 different lks that are barely bigger than ponds linked together by canals near Harrison,Mi. The launch was dirt and mud, didn't even have gravel, had to use a second 4 whl drive hooked to my truck just to get boat back out. It was hilarious,we idled around and put boat on plane a couple of times,EVERYONE on all the lakes came out and stood on their docks with a dumbfounded look. Most boats there were 12-17 ft,once on a while you'll see a 18ft v,maybe 21ft but rarely. If I were you would I do it,HELL yea. The novelty wears off pretty fast though,Smitty

Yup, ford power with a banks turbo system. I'm sure he's still wrenching on boats in that area.

Ha, OK then. My uncle was friends with Mr. Gick, and it's been a long time ago, but we went over to his house and he took us out in that old browning, I thought it was turbo, but couldn't remember. Man, that was the fastest boat around for a long time if im correct.

That is the boat that got me all fired up as a kid. I remember driving by the dock just to look at it. That was the fastest boat I had been on (at the age of ten or something.) Im not sure if many people know of Browning AeroCraft but with that turbo it was King.

We spent the summers in Mrs. Hawkins cabin across from you it sounds like. My uncle had a house on Jimmerson then built on Philips bay.

Now years & years later, I now keep a boat at Sowles Bay.

I miss Bledsoe's Beach from the old days. Now the Boat House Marina is torn down, they're building condo's in the channel. :dead1:
