i talked to gary out at merc before i bought my p-29 and he is the man who designed this blackhawk drive. he told me at testing the scarab at lake x that the same boat with bravos was 6 to 7mph slower because the blackhawks are surface drives. my personal opinion i like the blackhawks alot plus they throw alot of water.

This is where I think some of the 22' Scarab owners will have to chime in. That ebay add I posted above has a 22 Scarab with a blackhawk drive. Not real sure how it works for him. I think the 22 Scarab has alot of bow lift because the cockpit is set so far back and the nose is very light. I am building the motor with aluminum heads and so forth and my main concern is gonna be if it will hold up to a 450 hp 454. Also I am wondering if im gonna need trim tabs to make it work.

Need rocker no hook for starts.
Yep, the boat needs some rocker in the hull. It MIGHT work with a flat bottom with no hook. The blackhawks need to be at the surface as well so they are usually mounted 2-3" higher on the transom. The blackhawk, being a lot shorter, has a lot less leverage when you trim it up so that is the reason for your boat needing natural bow lift. Which is usually accomplished by rocker in the hull.

When you run your boat WFO now where do you trim your drive?
