Chaparral Villain III Ride Quality

I'm trying to find out if anyone out there has experience with the 24ft. Chaparral Villain III. I just purchased one a couple of weeks ago. The boat is solid red with 454 MAG/Bravo I and has very low hours. My only complaint is the ride quality. The boat handles rough water fairly well (22 degree deadrise hull), but porpoises at any speed and nearly any trim angle. This porpoising appears to be directly related to the weight at the back of the boat. The more people or gear we have near the back, the worse the ride gets. The boat is running a 23-pitch Mirage (not Mirage Plus) right now. I just contacted Hydromotive today and they recommended their Quad 4 to provide stern lift to correct my problem. I went ahead and shelled out $550 for a new prop. Does anyone have experience with this prop on this boat or with trim tabs on this boat? Mine doesn't have tabs.

Cool boat  Nice and clean. This is my 89' 2350sx, got the merc 454 tweaked into a Magnum, running the same 23 Mirage. Would be interested to see just how similar our hull designs are, and how much yours weighs. Anybody know, did Chap use the same hull with different decks bolted on? Not entirely happy with the rough water ride (the vee flattens out a little too much at the stern, do NOT get airborne because it can hurt when it comes down  ).
Dont have tabs and I see the sky if I'm not on plane. Way too much weight with 454 back there, and sometimes its hard to get it to fall over without feeling like I'm abusing the bravo.
Anyways, if you find some tabs sticking off the back one day, let me know how it does.

That's a nice looking boat, NEEDMOREBOAT. I'm not sure if the hull is the same or not. I know my Villain has a 22 degree deadrise at the transom, but it has a pad in the center. In other words, the 22 degrees don't continue to a "peak" at the middle like my Sunsation did. Actually, mine seems to land pretty soft in rough water. I have the same problem getting on plane, though. The nose sticks almost straight up in the air. I think the Hydromotive 4-blade I've got on order will help though. I'll let you know.

That is hard to say it ran so bad with Mirage I had on it. That is what came with the boat when I bought it. nly ran it once with that prop and was not worth running the way it was.

The guy I bought the boat from and several others that have stock 22's tell me they get about 64 on the speedo. I get that on the speedo but GPS is around 58. Right now the bottom is painted and it needs to be removed and the gel cleaned up. But having to much fun right now to take it out of service right now. Looks like a fall project.

Hole shot, acceleration and midrange cruise is fantastic. I am not disappointed with top end either. Just know there are things that need to be done to get it where it really should be for a stock boat.

I have been told that I should see a 2-3 MPH increase with the bottom paint removed and Gell cleaned up. That will put me just over 60. Which will make me happy.

:yeah: :yeah: :yeah: :yeah: :yeah:

And if you talk with Julie at Throttle Up they can always play with the prop to change the way it performs once you find an area that needs improvement...

I can't say enough about the service I got from them.

Again Just my $.02 worth.....

I have a V3 also. It has the same issues that yours have but mine has tabs, which helps somewhat. After reading these posts I traded my friend my 23 mirage for his 22 bravo 1(4-blade that has extra cupping in it) for the day. It rockets out of the hole compared to the mirage. The boat will start its porpoising crap but will come out of it on its own after a couple of seconds. The only downside is it tops out at about 62-63 (not gps) at about 5050 rpm. My Mirage runs 66 at 4800-4900. I tried a 23 mirage+ and it launches a hair better but I could only get 64 at 4800.

VillainIII, it's great to know there's someone else on here with a V3!!! Let me tell you what I've learned over the past few weeks...

1) When changing to a Bravo One from a Mirage, you should actually go UP one pitch. This would explain why your getting 5050 RPM out of the Bravo One. Usually, with a 4-blade you have to go down one pitch, which is what I did with the Hydromotive.

2) The Bravo One prop provides bow lift. The Hydromotive Intimidator Quad IV provides stern lift. Our boats need stern lift, not bow lift.

What engine are you running? 365hp 454 mag, or 330hp 7.4L? What year is your boat? What color?

VillainIII,

Mine has the Morse Offshore throttles and shifters, but I don't have silent choice. Mine is straight thru hull exhaust. My boat's a 1990 model. Your's is sharp and looks like it's in good shape.

I honestly don't know what top speed I was getting with the Mirage. With the Hydro, today I was only getting around 58mph at 4500 rpm. I should be running at 5100 rpm, according to the guys at Hydromotive. I think i've got a problem with the secondaries on my carburetor. I don't think they're opening. You're right where you need to be with that 5050 rpm. I'd say if you were getting that with a Hydro, you'd be kickin' ***.

Try opening your hatch. The first time I drove my boat my brother-in-law and I could only get 62 out of it at about 44-4500rpm. We were doing a full throttle run and opened the hatch and it immediately picked up 100 rpm so I trimmed it some more and by the time I was done I was bouncing off of the 67mph mark. I am going to drill some more holes in the side so it can get more air, but havent done it yet. My friends know if my hatch is up I am going for broke.
