Might be buying a older 357 SR1 Formula(1986). What would be better all around in a 357 SR1 TRS or Bravo 1? The engines will be 454'S 450 HP. Any speed differences or handling with the two? If I redo the transom for bravos I could raise the X-dim! I have newer Bravo drives and transom assemblies or I would need to buy a right hand TRS drive and rebuild the TRS assemblies.

The transmissions are the weak point in TRS drive applications, but in 1987, I think they were all B/W transmissions, which were stronger than the Merc trannies (really a one speed Ford C-6). The TRS wan't discontinued because they were a bad drive, they were dropped because they were expensive to build, including the transmission. I have one in a 22 Donzi. The transmission was fried when I bought the boat, but I had it rebuilt, with the extra clutch plate, and the shaft clearance. I was told it should be good to 650 horses.

A TRS is a very strong drive just very deep. There was a gent on OSO that bought my complete Bravo setup and put it on his 357 he did raise his X in the process and LOVES it. He is running a pair of 525SC's i believe. his screen name is offshoreratboy. If you do a search you will find out his setup. :)

I think either way you would be fine, but I believe the TRS is a stronger drive, and better for a heavy boat. The parts are no longer made, but still readily available if you know where to look. They shift really smooth, and if you add big power, you can always go to konrad drives which bolt up to the trs transom.

Bravos' are nice, lighter, cheaper, easy to find used, etc. Shorty lowers available.
