Pull the drive off 1x a year, grease the u-joints and grease the splines on the input shaft, with drive off you'll probably see all the fittings. inspect the boots. Good luck (be ready, its a little heavy)

 

What f311 said, also look inside the engine compartment there should be a grease fitting on the transom (top of the Gimbel bearing). I usually grease it about every two weeks one or two pumps of the grease gun as well as the fitting on the outside of the boat.

 

Yeah, the one on the right side of the transom assy is to grease the gimbal bearing. There is a cast path that leads to the bearing and the bearing has an opening that is clocked to coinside..Still have to pull the drive to do all the rest..

 

90 hrs. - Check alignment!

 

Do you need special tools to pull the drive and check the alignment.....bravo 3X by the way. 100 hrs

 

No special tools to pull drive. 5/8 Socket and wrench. You will need an alignment tool though, which is just a bar milled down to fit the bearing and splined shaft.

Have someone around though. Its a bit heavy.

 

You can get a great tool from www.mercstuff.com for less than $100.
