Im going to buy my buddies 38ft stinger. Its an 1988 375 with twin 454's and bravo's. Its a handful of work, but for the price im buying it, its worth it for me.

Heres what I plan to do to it and what it needs.

2 new 502 long blocks

2 rebuilt bravo drives

2 new couplers(one blown)

New dash and gauges

a complete cleaning and buff

vinyl graphics

Boat had new upholstery thruout last season

Boat has captains call, stainless marine exhaust, ac/heat/fridge/pumpout head/ hot water/shorepower/bolsters

When its all said and done, I should have about 30k total in the boat. My question is, who has the best deals on a pair of 502's and bravo's? And does obnoxus want to help me re-rig this beast?

MT, congrats on your new toy . Huge jump from your Lib :smile1: . I guess it's time to fork through the mags
for info :winker: .
My buddy is doing a 35' canopy boat from scratch ,and we're putting a single 572 in her. He's got a Donzi 33
with 502's and I tell ya ,we don't want to look at the flowscan while WOT on that one ;) :laugher:

Congratulations! Wow, that is a step up!

Not too rain on your parade, but going by the law of averages and of course not knowing the boat I will generically say.......

If you 100% will not spend or have atleast DOUBLE the money you think a project will take, then WATCH OUT!!!

Things always come up that are unexpected, even if you've done the same exact thing 100's of times.

If the project doesn't double or triple then you can sit back and feel good that it didn't.

Thats why i figure instead of trying to half a$$ it, ill just replace both motors, and drives from the get go. I figure a pair of big blocks 10k, a pair of new bravos 7k, gauges 500. Sell the tired 454 mags(they run) for 3k, and the used drives for 2k. I know, Im getting way ahead of myself. I should have 15k in motor and drives when its over. Of course the little things like trim pumps, hoses, wires, etc add up. I wouldnt mind having the stock mags rebuilt, but after dealing with an engine builder last year, I dont want my motors in the shop for 4 or 5 months to save a few bucks.

CFM, the hour meter reads 850 hours. He has had the boat 5 years, and doesnt know if they were ever rebuilt. One burns a quart every hour or two. I havent done a compression test or leakdown yet, but I figure to prepare for the worst. He ran them kind of hard, so I figure rebuild or replace. One motor has to come out because of a blown coupler anyway.

We hooked up with a guy at LOTO last year that had just purchased a mid 80-s stinger...had to have been 35-38 feet long...it was a monster and had the big radar arch...it was battleship gray and looked like a gosh darn freighter coming down the cove. Hey Eddie...what was his name? I think it had twin 350-s though....sweet old boat.

Congrats MT...the stingers are some great looking boats IMHO. I love the huge interior. Good choice on your part...keep us updated on the improvements. I'm eager to see the changes because I seriously considered a Stinger when searching for a boat.

http://www.1800runsnew.com/recon.htm Has decent deals on 502s around 5900. They do build a real nice 540 too
Yes, John is the one I talk to over there and a real good guy.

They have killer deals on NEW GM Marine 502's.

I would think this would be the best no-nonsense approach to repowering and worth the extra couple of $$'s over 454's, especially aince you are buying a HUGE boat.

When you buy it and start working on it make sure to start a thread on your work. I'll bet most of us will appreciate even more being able to follow your project.
