My boat quit - Could it be my garden hose???

I got the 'ole lady out of storage yesterday to get it ready for the summer (454Mag/Bravo). This is the first time I've run this boat on my garden hose with the muffs. I've done this before with my small block/Alpha with no problems.

Well with my hose on full blast, when I start the motor all of the water is being drawn into the drive, no extra spray like I used to get with the small block. After about 10 second the boat quit???? I'm hoping this is because of the water and nothing else, is this possible? Could the lack of water cause the boat to quit? It's not over heating, it was only running for like 10 seconds.

I made sure my hose was on full and tried again, and it quit again after about 20 seconds. It sounds fine when it's running. I don't want to start it again, but I also hope this is just a water problem and not an engine problem. Any input would be great!!!

Yeah, she got the full treatement of Stabil. Could it have been just the fact that it was the first (and then second) time it had been started this year?

Sounds like a no on the water. I think I better try and run her again and throttle it a touch, see if it just needs to be run, free it up a little.

Check the oil for water.

If you see water in the oil, pull a plug and see if water is in cylinders.

Did you have boat on level fround or at an angle? If at an angle was the stern up and the bow down?

This makes me feel much better! I think I'll light the fire again tonight when I get home and let it run, hoping it will. I just didn't want to start it again yesterday thinking it was my garden hose pressure that was causing my problem. I think I'll start it, goose it a touch, and see if she'll idle for longer then 20 seconds. Here's to hoping....

Thanks for the input, guys.

This may or not be a contributer to your problem. But I've heard that gas can go to chitt after sitting for a few months. Even if you put stabilizer in it. Again, just what I've heard.

There was about 20 gallons in my tank when I put the boat up for the winter. I did add stabelizer to it. But I'm going to syphone it into 5 gallon cans and use it for the lawn mowers or whatever. Then put fresh stuff in before the 1st start of the season.

Good luck. Hope there's nothing serious going on.

Yep the empty fuel filter is defintely the problem. If you have electric fuel pump on the 454 you can turn the switch on and off several times (10 or so) to help fill the filter first. But give it some throttle while cranking and that should help as well, don't worry you can't flood the motor cause it's not getting fuel. :D
