TBN 8.3 Plenty of active additive left, could've continued to run this oil according to Blackstone.

I'm pretty impressed with this oil. The additive pack is VERY strong (after 21 hrs), much stronger than the Kendall I've been using and stronger than virgin M1-EP. And didn't even shear out of grade. It's the strongest dino oil I've seen, that's for sure. I guess those guys at Mercruiser know what they are doing?

Mercruiser has also come out with a 25W40 synthetic blend, same as the other with 2 different weights, not mutli-visocity. After countless researches and talking to reputable engine guys, I'm told this IS the oil to use in stock-mild performance motors. Plus no warrentee issues with Mercruiser.

Mercruiser manual (496HO) does not recommend synthetic and I was told by Mercury that my warranty would be voided, although I believe that can be disputed. I'm warranted until 2008 so I decided not to take chances but regardless, based on what I've found in researches both the Mercruiser 25W40 conventional and synthetic blend are excellent oils. I change my oil every 20-25 hours which, for my motor, is probably most important thing when it comes to oil. I also use NAPA Gold (Wix) filters.

Gilla, I've got some pics around here somewhere. I took some shots of both filters, (Merc Racing & M1-302) side by side and they are identical. Even the same baseplate piecemark (i). Either way, (WIX or Champion) the Merc Racing Filter (Black) is good stuff. And it's not overpriced, either. I pay 10 bucks for M1-302's. WIX is just about the same. I bought two MR filters for Bill's boat @ 11 bucks each.

FYI:
The new Merc 496's come with synthetic oil in them from Merc, and the manual states that Merc synthetic is required.

A freind (also a Merc tech) just boat a new Velocity w/ 496HO and that is what his manual said. He didn't know Merc had synthetic yet, but ordered some and he now has it.

Me - I use Amsoil 20 - 50. I do like how synthetics keep the inside of the motor clean w/o and sludge.

I don't think Mercury has a synthetic oil. Perhaps you're referring to their 25W40 synthetic blend?
