I am looking at a 2002 PowerQuest Viper 34 with 496 HO's. Any feedback on this boat would be appreciated. I am a bit concerned about the status of the comapny since it has been closed for a year with only rumors of reopening. Again, any feedback would be welcome.

Buddy had a '01 Viper. Very nice boat. I agree somewhat about the factory, but the boat is out of warranty and any problems will be fixed at your choosing/expense. For the most part, the rest will be mechanical issues for which Merc is Merc. I don't know how it would affect the resale value. Some people may look at it differently with no factory support, but it wouldn't stop me from buying one.

I had an '02 w/ 496's.
Lots of room, very comfortable. Build quality was VERY good. Never had any troubles. Three of us here bought one at the same time, myself, Macklin, & Vyper340.
All 3 boats have been trouble free. They are fast too, 78 all day and 80 - 81 with conditions just right.

Don't know of the condition of the boat your looking at, but Macklin is quietly offering his boat up for sale. I can guarantee there is no other PQ 340 in as good of condition or well maintained as his boat. Can you spell anal? ;)
If you ARE serious about getting a 340, his boat deserves a serious look.

PQ made nice boats. You should not be concerned if PQ is around or not. The hardware on the boat is top notch. Should anything need fixing, you can get parts from the supplier or most boating outlets. Basically, PQ made the fiberglass and the upholstery - both of which can be repaired locally. Just about everything else was supplied and PQ assembled it. The boats are strong and well built. I would be suprised to even see a stress crack.

There are 3 of us locally that have or had that year boat. What else do you want to know?

Thanks all. Great input. The boat is spotless with a way over built Manning trailer. He is asking 100k which seems to be a great price based upon what I am seeing on the net. I also was wondering if anyone knew the size of the holding tank and also how many hours I can expect from these engines. Any idea about the gas usage as well would be helpful. I am making the jump from a cruiser to a go fast and that is why the size of the cabin on the PQ was so attractive. But, the wife is less sure of this direction!

There were different holding tanks.
If it is a vacuflush, the holding tank is about 6 gal.
Mileage is about 1.5 MPG at cruise and about 1.1 mpg at WOT.
Hopefully it has a macerator, but unlikely as they didn't build many with that option.

I was dealing last year ( trying to ) on a 1999 280 Silencer HOLD OVER with 5 hours...yes a 1999 holdover in 2005 with 5 hours. NUTS! Dealer wouldn't budge $$. Infact I bugged and worked on them for nearly three years before I gave up. Anyway, I was in that boat three summers in a row and all I can say is I was quite impressed overall.

vista, I sent you a PM last night loaded with info. As indicated in the PM, I didn't want that price you indicated to come back to the top. ;) But I bet that boat is not nearly as loaded with all the goodies mine has.

Is there a way you can set preferences to be automatically notified of new PM's? It really should be the default. I have looked before and can't seem to find a button for it. But it wouldn't be the first time I looked past something that was right in front of me.

As I mentioned before, we all bought all 3 of ours at the same time. They were virtually identical (loaded) except for paint.
Here is the options & 2002 retail price when I ordered mine.

340 W/ 496HO 172,750.00
Level 2 Graphics 2,850.00
Tilt Helm 520.00
Sea Strainers 1,400.00
Clock 220.00
Audio System 1,035.00
Drive Showers 370.00
Pull Up cleats 895.00
Transom Shower 250.00
Vacuflush head 1,430.00
Macerator 500.00
Presure Water w/ sink 535.00
Shower 1,320.00
Weekend Pakage 2,985.00
Stainless foot rest 170.00
Competition Pakage 4,705.00
Freight 1,200.00

Macklin's (and 340vyper's) boat should be 99.9% the same options. I forget what package includes what, but the boats have heat/AC, hot/cold water, etc, etc and they STILL went 77 to 80 mph depending on load, and condtions. Very roomy and comfortable seating.
Hope this helps.

BillR: It is only a manual pump, no vaccu flush. Also, I am in the great lakes area so the maceator is out. You mentioned another 340 that I should consider. Is it listed on another site? Thanks for your input!
Vista268, I'm not sure what year your lookin' to stay around but I have a friend who has a 1995, 340 Viper that is just flawless!!!!! It has a set of fresh 540 Bull Dog motors that probably only have 20 hours on them and were built by the same guy who built my motors and T-man98's motors. It has also had several upgrades like a plasma T.V.,custom painted gauge panels and a custom paint job that looks AWESOME!!!! (Similar to to graphics you see on the Eliminator Daytona's)
The windshield has been removed and was replaced with the race fairing which makes the boat in my opinion.
The boat is here in Michigan and he runs it on Higgins Lake and Grand Haven sometimes. He is lookin' towards a cruiser and thats the only reason he is selling it.
Once again the boat is absolutely flawless inside and out and has some real nice motors in her. Plus it's a lot less than a 100K.
If your interested just let me know and I will put you in touch with him.
