Can't you just pull the tape off when the paint starts to get tacky? this way you won't be pulling any paint off with the tape. I thought i heard someone tell me that one time.
That's what I did last night. As soon as I was done painting and cleaned up, I immediately pulled the tape, being sure to pull it away from the wet paint.

Cuda, before you paint any surface, you should
!) Lightly go over the surface with a Dual Action sander with 400 grit paper. There should be no shine in the old paint before you spray on the new paint.
2) Then hit it with a prep solvent or reducer or thinner.
3) Then you can paint it with anyt type of paint you desire.
4) wait a day for it to dry.
5) After it's dry, you can apply tape (be sure to use at least a lime green tape). Once you have painted the taped off area, leave the tape on there for at least 16 hours, at least.
6) Then pull the tape off at a 45 degree angle. This will ensure good, defined, paint lines.

Most important thing, if you want the paint to last, prep the surface properly. Including sanding and cleaning.

Something you guys are forgetting to help your paint stick... PRIMER, PRIMER, PRIMER? I paint for a living, and I would never think of not using primer, unless I was airbrushing. Jay, like BajaIceBreaker said, move up to at least 400 grit paper with an orbital sander. Otherwise, with 100 grit, you will see a bunch of sanding marks. Also, is it legal to spray outdoors in Florida??? I bet the EPA would have a field day with you.

Shameless, It says right on the can use in a well ventilated area. Well Thats what I did. Out in the middle of a field LOL
I think that is adequate ventilation.
Cuda, I went to Lowes tonight and got more paper and bought the blue less tacky tape 30 hr type.
I hope that will prevent any paint lifting of any sort this weekend in the paint field.
Im going to stop at the boaters world store and pick up a qt of this yellow that you used and the necessary thinner and get some sandpaper (less than 100 grit I agree is better just to knock off the shine on the boat)
One problem rick and I ran into was the gel on this boat is HARD!
Was tearing up 100 grit sheets like nothing! I did the whole one side by hand and rick was using the palm sander, I think the hand side came out better myself but ricks side seemed to be MUCH harder to knock off the shine than my side.
Any ideas wtf is up with that?
I also hand sanded the deck with 100 and that came out just fine as well.
Problem with primer is I think it will stick to the gel just as good as the paint will regardless. The gel is porous so I think the paint would bite into that dont you guys?
J

I would think so Jay...If primer sticks to it..then your paint should..your already starting out with a nice smooth surface..Knock the shine off like you said, and POW, you should be good to go!! Shoot the paint, and then a few coats of clear, and you shoud be money!!

Jay, I've found that 150 grit is more than adequate. Buy that special paper that claims it lasts three times longer and cuts faster, because it does! I was wishing I had some more of that on hand today. I'm covered with gel and paint dust right now.

I wouldn't bother!

Black matches everything, anyway. When you decide to repaint your boat next year, it will still match.

I have an ULGLY BLUE trailer for my Purple and Yellow little Donzi. Obviously I bought the trailer used later for next to nothing. The boat is only on there for the maintenance that happens. Otherwise, it the trailer sits in the woods, with the boat on the dock.

If you do want to touch up the trailer, you might want to add matching aliens and doggies to it.

In reality, thanks for your thread!! You and Cuda are giving me a chance to think about painting some graphics on my boat, myself, this winter!!

Best of luck with your project!

The way I looked at it, if I screw it up, it would only need to be repainted, which it needed anyway. :)
