stingray69, thanks for the sit , but i'll just rebuild it for now.I found a marine mechanic from HI- PERFORMANCE to do the job for $3,500.00 . CFM, he does have some stainless marine manifolds that he's going to install when the engine's done . :cl1: :laugher:

i'm going to paint the boat this year, what's a good marine paint to use? I was told AWL GRIP2000 . did anyone ever tried this stuff?

Those Pushrods Camshafts and lifters are gone.
some have run then mixed up using friction eliminators but sooner or later the lifters will eat the cam up.
The Pushrods costs only dimes here, get new ones.
7/16s should work if you hade them before..or then the builder took out your guide plates and changed them to 3/8´s..
I should get my hand on that Schmuck, feel more and more that work is to be done over there RIGHT and the 1st time.

Iron Heads seldom warp so no problem there.
Just check with a straight metal ruler facing to light.
And you could unshroud the combustion chambers also while at it...gives free horsepower.
Just be sure what you do do it even on every chamber.
A good machinist can do that if no-one of your buddies aren´t able or yourself.
Remember everyone starts from ZERO.

BBC open Chamber porting

The links I gave aren´t my parts they are for sale at Ebay just for reference or go ahead.

I´d be you Id pick up a used engine from a dismantler and start there, sametime get the crank kit from Scat/Lunati whatever as long as it´s steel.

PM me if questions.. as we have a time difference of 8-10 hrs...or messenger works too ..guess you just have to link a webcam and computer at your garage :laugher:

Ohh and the pics of your rods?

Eagle 6.385 #63833D H-Rods 460$
Eagle 4.25 Stroke Internal Balance Crank 760$
Rod Bearings 32$
Main Bearings 61$
Cam Bearings 27$
Sealed Power Hi Volume Oil pump 70$
Oil Pump Drive shaft ,steel 15$
Brass Freeze Plugs 15$
Felpro Gasket set 181$
Pushrods 7/16 240$*
Without Camshaft and timing chain Total:2470$

+Competition Cams Cam kit CCA-K11-451-8 Hydraulic Roller includes timing chain kit Valve Springs lifters etc 930$
Or a CCA-K11-240-4 Hydraulic kit 407$

With Hydraulic Roller/Flat tappet cam Total 3400/2877$ FOB.

A Used Block 500 Tops.

With these parts I reckon you´re around 550-600hp.
*Price of summits Pushrods seems way off as for ex. Martels Bros sell Manleys 7/16 that are one of the best (and I trust them) for under 110.

AWLGRIP works good but to get a topcoat you just buy gelcoat and add paraffin oil some drops...

If you go internal balance (it is the best way) you will have to change the flyweel and the damper since the OEM balance on a 454 is external.

Cstraub yes you´re right but I Think the Eagle internal Balance cranks comes with notes to that.
I went with the Best bang for the buck stuff here generally.

Man of war be ready to dish some more than 3500 if the 3500 wasn´t for assembly and installing in the boat only.
Afterall its at least a weeks work total for the guy anyway you look at it.
And Me wouldn´t either do it quite cheap...mans gotta live too.

Damper and a flywheels can be rebalanced too..just lathe them weights off.

Just from my own experiances...They will find more that needs to be done...align hone..rods resized...springs etc..etc.....You can buy a marine 502 long block for 5k or so...WARRANTY !!!!!NEW MERC PARTS !!!
You will spend 5k on yours before you are done ! NO doubt in my mind...
Try Dereberry...They were the best when i bought Bravos

Agreed. If you want just a good 400HP marine engine I would call Jasper engines. I think for $4300 or so you get that kind of power and a 1 year warranty.

I'll speak up.

If this same person rigged your boat I would ask for double $$$ or more back.

Again, man of war, I'm not mad at you, although it sounds it. I'm also disgusted by your situation and I want to make sure it is done properly. I hade to see more mishaps for you, and I'd REALLY hate to here that your boat went BOOM / SIZZLE with anybody on it. Morally, I just can't back off of this.

Rigging correctly (I'm not talking bling - just USCG legally, safe, and proper engine functionality) is going to cost a cabunch more $$$$.

For those who don't know - here is the pics of the rigging posted on another thread

YUP! What BD said!

You will be way farther ahead biting the bullet and plunking down the bucks up front, with a real warranty, than going back down this iffy road again. You will have double the 3500 involved (7000) when its all said and done, for a 454, (with a debatable chance for success) when you can have a garanteed 502, for about 5300.

To get it running, slap on a stock 502 mag intake and carb, and upgrade it down the road. I have a set I got from Boatn70, that I didn't use, that I would let go CHEAP.

Better safe than TWICE sorry, but it's your summer, to lose or not.

I am sorry your friend has had bad luck, it happens to the best of us, but I assure you they are a great company to deal with.

Good friend owns a repair shop.{Automobiles}..He started using them again after they started improving & has had great luck with them..I wont even go into the rep they had 10-20 years ago.

They are rebuilding CAR engines & selling them for BOATS....You know as well as I..That wont work..
