Rescuers resume search for girl who fell into Sassafras River

Rescuers resumed their search Saturday morning for an 11-year-old girl who fell from a boat into the Sassafras River in Kent County Friday afternoon.

The girl was sitting in the bow of a 22-foot power boat when the boat was jolted by a tugboat's big wake, tossing her overboard near Ordinary Point in Kennedyville about 4:30 p.m. Friday, Maryland Natural Resources Police Sgt. Art Windemuth said.

"It threw her out of the bow and into the water and she went missing," he said.

Police have not released the name of the girl, who had been boating with her family.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Maryland Natural Resources police and area fire companies searched until 11:30 p.m. Friday, when the search was suspended to give rescuers a break, Windemuth said. With sonar equipment and search dogs, the effort resumed at first light Saturday.

Wow that sucks. Im sure it will not turn out good but I hope they at least find her. Nothing worse in a parents life than a missing child. I wonder why she was not wearing a life jacket? My kids always wear a jacket unless we are in shallow low traffic areas.

Very very sad.

Really a shame when things like this happen to people (kids) who are out enjoying themselves on the water.

I can imagine that would be the end of my boating days if there was a tragedy in our family like this, would just take any joy out of it knowing someone was lost.

That is so freaking sad.

My children ALWAYS where there life jackets from leaving the dock to returning to the dock.

I feel so terrible for that child and its loved ones.

God Bless.

Very Sad :(
My thoughts and prayers go out to there family.

At 11 years old she should of had a Life jacket on. It is law that any child 12 years and under wear one at all times when the boat is in motion.

God bless her and her Family. :(

Very sad for sure, sometimes people don't realize how quickly things can happen. Several times this summer I have seen the same boat go by with 2 young girls on the bow with their toes in the water as they cruise by. This is a smaller bowrider with no bow rail for them to hang on to, just sitting there with their feet dangling. All it takes is for one of them to loose their balance and they will be under the boat so fast the driver won't know what happened. Boats don't stop on a dime. Be careful out there.

Sad!!!

Life jacket or not from what the article said the results may have been the same except a search might not have been needed. She was hit by the boat after falling out.

Even my oldest (13) wears a life jacket at all times. 2 years ago I was at a beach and helped pull a 11yr old girl from the water that had been missing 20+ minutes. We found her in 4 ft of water right behind her parents boat........30 minutes of CPR did nothing and she died right there.
I will NEVER forget that and still blame the parents for most of these stupid "accidents" (who should know better).

May she RIP :(

I could never be comfortable operating a vessel like this. If there was no bow rail then NOBODY would be sitting on the bow and if no grab handles then IN the bow would be out too.

How could a parent not think of the dangers of this? :(

When I had a bowrider NOBODY rode up front,PERIOD
When hitting a wave the bow gets the most movement and can easily toss anybody out.

My heart goes out to the parents :(

This little girl was from my marina (Skipjack Cove). We were down there trying to help with locating her. The mother was hysterical on the dock Friday when she went missing. It was very terrible to see.

I have a 12-year-old daughter and I can't imagine what the parents are going through.

My thoughts and prayers are with them.

I know you guys have a daughter that age and my heart sank when I first head about this.

Such a horrible tragedy. I know the water gets very rough around Ordinary Point with all the traffic.

I just read an article on the local paper, it states: "Only children 7 and younger are required to wear a life vest if they are on a boat 21 feet or less and the boat is under power"

This should really be revisited. I was always under the impression (and followed the rule that) if you are 12 or less, while moving you wore a jacket.

The article goes on to say that 80% of all deaths related to boating accidents could have been prevented by wearing lifejackets.

It's very much like the seat belts in my mind (that, back in the day NONE of us wore, even as children).

Peace be with the family.

Having three children 8, 9, & 11 this makes me sick.

As for the life vest not making a difference. Her chances would have been better with one on PERIOD

Even if the boat hit her she would have been floating on top of the water and maybe, just maybe, would have given her a fighting chance.

I agree Bill. You would take any chance you could get to bring her back. What a nightmare to go through.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

People who know me, know that I'm a different person when my Grandson is on the boat. (He's 3 1/2)

I absolutely LOVE having him come out with us, but the whole time
I'm tense, worried, over cautious & can't relax. THIS is why.

I feel awful for the family. Not only suffering the loss of a child,
(which is devastating) but the guilt they'll feel the rest of their lives.

terrible, terrible news.

i dont know, i dont know the people at all and for sure it is a a bad scene all together but i think the driver should be charge, recless indangerment or something.

im in 38' and the wife wont let me idle out to anchore in the no-wake zone without a jacket on zac, i know for sure she wouldnt let him sit leaning against the windshield up topside.

i see big cruisers and that "tweeks" me when i see them underway with kids up top.

NOT TRYIN TO CAUSE A BAD TIME, SORRY FOR THE FAMILIES LOSS, ID BE A BASKET CASE IF IT WAS ZAC.

RIP LITTLE ONE!
