Re: Re: Small block exhaust manifold options...

Well, You asked, and I gave it you, but by all means, Go for it.. :)
and quite frankly... I am grateful for it! What I got from your post, is that even though there is perhaps some real, measurable difference in power with the imcos and others, it's probably not enough that I will be disappointed in performance if I go much less expensive, near stock aluminum manifolds and extended risers to deal with possible reversion issues...

What's really funny... is that when I asked Joey (Griffin) the guy building it for me, how much of a difference it would make if I went the cheap rout on the manifolds.. he said almost exactly the same thing... in a very friendly sort of way. Off topic a bit, but I have been really pleased and impressed with him and his operation. The almost (legendary?) reputation he has around the area here is clearly well-deserved... I haven't lived here that long, and absolutely everyone I asked about machine shops said the same thing. "Go see Joey Griffin over in Washington". I'm glad I did. He knows his work and has also been very patient with questions and a straight shooter on costs and timing. One day when I stopped out to drop something off, he showed me some of the tolerances on the short block - real quality work and more consistent tolerances than I've ever seen. I'm not an expert in performance engine builds, but I was (formally) trained as a machinist and have put a few toys together. Joey's guys are good.

I'm still thinking about the grand difference in cost on manifolds... and am going to wait to see the final bill from the machine shop before making the decision... If I go cheap, I can always spent the extra money to step up later... If I spend $2k now, probably can't ask for a refund is gas money gets short this summer, eh...

The weight topic is probably every bit as important... I see 2-3 mph difference when I put an 80 pound tool box and spare prop in the engine compartment now... this boat is small and fairly light (18')... probably will be about 2300 pounds with the new engine, fluids and 1-2 people... I went with cast heads because we play in brackish a lot and salt once in a while...

and thanks... I do appreciate the replies to my questions.

Your welcome, but hey, if you can afford it, go for it, they sure do look a Lot better than stock, that's for sure. along with a few more ponies, but shaving pounds off is really the key factor.
But you may want to wait until you see the builders bill 1st. :)

In a 18' boat the weight difference will be huge. It may also help handling. Like Fy said, get what you can afford. You can't go wrong from getting the imco's. I have had them for years and love them. They are on built small blocks as well.

You should have mentioned Griffin, he is a absolutely awesome engine builder.

I didn't realize he was that well known in this this world. It's no suprise after seeing their work. The day I stopped out, he showed me deck deck to top of piston measurements at tdc for a few cylinders with a dial indicator. They were so close, I couldn't tell the difference on the 0.001 inch dial - well under 0.001' variation between cylinders... It's no wonder they seem to have a relatively constant sream of big blue blower engines moving through the shop...

I eventually (really) want something bigger and a lot faster, (maybe 25 - 30', twin big blocks, etc...) but since this is my first I/O I figured I'd start with something small (and a LOT cheaper) that I can work on, play at setting up and get some some seat time in before getting into something I can't afford to break.

I have been running EMI's, not one issue with them. Run a 250/258 solid roller and have never had any reversion issue. Also put a set on my dads 502.

I can tell a differance in handling with some weight out of the stern, I don't know how much I lost, have a aluminum, heads, intake, exhaust. I can say it might handle worse with the weight out, damn full tank is in the bow :(

hell I think aftermarket is worth it just for the clean, better looks :D

I got them on line and I gave all the info to the guy thet bought the boat . I do know that the tall valve covers will not fit stainless marine exhaust, they are the shorter ones with 3/8 thick gaskets and I ran comp roller rockers with 548 lift did not hit. It looks like Jegs sell them now part # 555-50162 $89.99 hope this helps. :D

rrocky follow up on my paint code question... I asked what color / paint on the engines a while ago and based on your reply have tried several candy reds but they don't look right... I am going to make a final color decision early next week and plan to shoot dupont / nason single stage urethane over zinc chromate primer... please :)
